Thanksgiving Meal Deals: Buying The Turkey

by Kelly on November 16, 2009

Glad you stopped by! Looking for something? Checkout my Categories and Resources page.

Roasted TurkeyIn an effort to make planning your Thanksgiving meal much easier, I am going to be posting different deals I find and articles that might help you out throughout the week.

Wondering how big of a turkey to purchase? Here are a few tips to help you purchase your turkey this year.

  • 1 to 1.3 lbs per person, if you want leftovers
  • 1/2 to 3/4  for turkey breast only (not a whole bird)
  • the larger the bird, the higher the proportion of meat to bone
  • save the carcas and leftovers to make Turkey and Wild Rice Soup (posted next week!)

Where can you get a good deal on a turkey?
Everyone has put their turkey’s on sale this week, so I would snag them now before they are gone. The price will definitely go up next week!

Walmart — $.40/lb
SuperTarget — $.88/lb for Butterball (check out this deal scenario!)
Kroger – $.67/lb with $20 purchase, $.79/lb without qualifying purchase
Harris Teeter – $.59/lb with a $25 minimum purchase
Aldi - Butterball Whole Turkey (12 to 20-lbs.), $0.99/lb
Publix - $.69/lb for Publix Young Turkey (limit 5)
Food Lion - $.47/lb with $35 purchaes (limit 2) begins 11/17

Find something that needs to get posted, a great article on planning, a good price on a turkey or your favorite recipe? Email it to me or leave a comment and share with others!
