Cooking 101: Black Bean Pizza

Glad you stopped by! Looking for something? Checkout my Categories and Resources page.

I got the idea for this recipe after I had been to my friend Heather’s house. She was pulling together lunch and asked me if I wanted to try the new pizza she got on sale, it was the Kashi Mexicali Black Bean pizza. I thought it sounded weird, but wanted to try it.  I LOVED it!

Here is my version, I couldn’t remember what was on it, and just made it up as I went along. Well, it was a hit, my husband loved it and it will now be a regular in our house.  As you know, I love Frank’s Hot sauce, so of course that was in the bean puree and on the pizza.

Black Bean Pizza

2 whole wheat pizza crusts, homemade or store bought
1 can black beans, drained
1/3 cup salsa
2-4 Tbs. hot sauce (i.e. – Franks or Texas Pete)
any roasted veggies – onions, red peppers, corn, mushrooms,
3/4 cup diced or shredded cooked chicken (optional)
3/4 cup shredded cheese, any kind (monterey jack, cheddar or mozzarella)

1.  Combine black beans, salsa and hot sauce (optional) into a food processor and blend until a puree. If it is too thick, add more salsa until it blends well. Add more hot sauce if it doesn’t taste spicy enough!

2.  Saute or roast veggies you will be topping with.
*I just sauteed some onion slices and sliced frozen red peppers I had in the freezer, over the stove top to soften them up first.

3.  Spread half of bean puree on each pizza crust, like you would tomato sauce for a regular pizza. (or freeze the other half for later!)

4. Top with chicken, roasted veggies and cheese.

5. Cook in a 400 degree oven for 12-15 minutes. Slice and eat. I garnish mine with hot sauce too.

Since you like hot sauce, a twist on this is to make buffalo chicken pizza.

I use chicken that I’ve boiled and shredded and toss it with a little buffalo wing sauce (I love the Franks brand). Take a pizza crust and spread a thin layer of buffalo wing sauce on it, top with the chicken, and cheese of choice (I prefer the skim-milk mozzarella). Bake and enjoy with ranch or blue cheese dressing if preferred. You can always add veggies on top or serve with celery.

It’s my favorite way to get one of my favorites (buffalo chicken strips or wings) without all of the fat from frying.

Kelly,

This sounds great. It reminds me of a pizza I had while in Mazatlan Mexico last summer at El RIN RIN (which is Spanish for DING DONG), it was a Pizza place much like our Pizza Hut. They had a Mexican Pizza there with beans as their base, Chorizo, Jalapenos and cheese and was served with a strange sauce on the side. Took me a while to figure out what it was. It was mayo and ketchup. It really complimented the pizza.

Feedback on your website, you have such great recipes that I would really love some sort of search bar to find past recipes.

Franks is my most very favorite hot sauce too girls! For my buffalo chicken pizza I combine abt 1/4 cup of melted yogurt butter (or any kind of butter I have on hand) with 2/3 cup of Franks. Then I add chopped or pulled chicken, dump it all on the pizza crust and top with cheese. Not quite as healthy as Jessica’s version but that little bit of butter really helps! Kelly, this black bean version looks great. Thanks for sharing, can’t wait to try it!

Hi friends

I really love cooking of various unusual meals. I had luck to find really great and unusual recipes at http://www.wrightstores.us. This company is selling special REMOSCA Cookers. It’s the great device for cooking wide variety of great meals and especially fantastic PIZZAS. These cookers are perfect for outdoor cooking too. I am using one in my truck since they have pretty low power consumption. These cookers can be cleaned very easily.

Anyway they are selling a lot of truly wonderful items too.

Have a great day.

Best regards Ed
