I have recently started the Give, Save and Spend envelopes for my kids. I have told them they must give and save at least $1 each time that receive money for their chores. It has been great to see that they are giving more than expected in each envelope. Proud Mom!!! :0)
I am a nanny and I give chores around the house to the 5 year old. We started out with pennies and allowing her to buy things at the store for like 5 cents 10 cents like candy.. then as she got used to it and learned more about counting by 10 we used dimes because they are easy to count out at this age.. We have used the book Whats in a Dime.. it works really well to count by 10’s and it shows how 10% of a dollar goes to God, 10% goes to savings too its working really well.
When our kids get birthday money, we make them tithe 10%, bank half of what’s left and keep the other half for something special.
Teaching kids early is key. I’ve been listening to Dave Ramsey since I was 10 and his show was called The Money Game! It’s been instilled in me since before money really meant anything in my world that it was something that had to be handled carefully and intentionally.
This would be great for our 5 year old. We try to talk to her about budgeting, why we do it, and why it is important.

I’ve only tried budgeting with the kids by having three banks for their money: spend, save, give. But this will be SO much more helpful! Thanks for the opportunity to learn more about it!
Did the giveaway already happen? It said “ends Jan.22”. Anyways, we use a chore chart right now, and the kids get paid for work they do. The more they do, the more they earn. They get a “check” at the end of the week for their “pay”. We have envelopes that are “save” “spend” and “tithe”.

I would love this for my 9 & 6 year old kiddos! I have recently started to involve them in the clothing buying process. I will take them along to help to pick out things they like; when they pick out something with a sale tag I praise them for a job well done! If they pick out something that is a little out of our price range I explain to them that it doesn’t fit our budget and we check back on future visits until it goes on sale:)…They love the anticipation of finding something they love for a good deal!

Just finished the FPU course. It is life changing! I finally feel like we are in charge of our money and not the opposite! We have transferred some of what we have learned to our three children, but would love to check out what he has for the kids!

I have a 4 and 6 yr old & so far we haven’t discussed budgeting with them… that’s why we really need FPU Jr.
I enjoy listening to Dave Ramsey and his tips on not being “normal”. I would love to win this for my children to start learning how to be wise with their money. So far we haven’t done much because my little one is 2 but she will be three soon enough so we can start.
My husband and I have used the Dave Ramsey system for years. We would love to use it for our 9 yr old as well. We have taught a give, save, and spend method but don’t really have a system for doing it. Thanks
I have an 18 month old, so we haven’t started it yet, but we go by the “give one, save one, spend the rest” concept (use dimes and put $1.00 in different jars).
We use a marble system with our 6 & 7 yr olds. They earn marbles for jobs and cooperation. They can lose marbles for not doing a job or not cooperating. After a certain number of marbles has been earned they can be redeemed for $, special dates with mom or dad, or sleepiness. This system seems to help out with teaching the value of a dollar. Money is not free, we have to work for it!
Today I am starting a Chore Chart with my 2 1/2 year old. She gets a sticker for each completed chore and at the end of the week we will add up her stickers and trade them in for nickels. We want to teach her responsibility now so she doesn’t think that you just get money and what you want without having to work for it.

This would be a great addition to our family. We have a 9 year old son that we are teaching financial responsibility. He has to maintain his grades in school (we teach him that IS his job for now). He has chores around the house but he doesn’t get ‘paid’ for that.

Our kids are still small but we’re letting them learn by ‘playing’ with money. They have their own wallets and a toy cash register and we like to play store. We also remind them that Daddy has to work very hard for the money we have and that everything we buy costs his time as well as the paper (or plastic) he pays for it.

Financial Management for kids comment: my only two cents worth is that it needs to be something that builds in choices for the kids, so they make mistakes early on that are small before making really big mistakes that will really cost them in the future. I’m not familiar with Dave Ramsey, but I am hoping that’s part of his system.

With my husband out of work currently we have really been trying to teach our girls how to we have to budget to purchase things and that we have to plan all our expenses out carefully, I think this would be great!!!

My son is three so we are just starting out with teaching him about money. We’re making a chore chart with chores you have do because you are part of the family (brush teeth, clean room) and chores that earn money (help with laundry, clean up smaller brother’s toys, etc). He will also have to tithe to our church on money he earns.

My husband & I are in the process of reading/doing Dave’s Total Money Makeover. I looked at the Jr. version for my children, but I couldn’t afford to get both. My children are 12 & 9 and I don’t want them to make the same financial mistakes my husband & I have made.

My kids are just the ages to get started on this program!
I have 3 children and we have always had them put any money given to them whether it was from baby showers, holidays or birthdays, into their bank accounts. We also have taught them to recycle aluminum cans and every time we cash in our cans at our local recycling center, the money we get from that is also put in their bank accounts along with any loose change we roll during the year. They even once commented on our way home as they saw lots of cans on the side of the road “look at all that money out there just lying on the road!” That’s when you know you’ve taught them right!

I purchased this kit several years ago for my niece & nephew. It worked wonders for them. The way my wife & I teach our child how to handle money is by letting them watch us do our envelope system each week. He always sees us paying with cash & we also never fight about money/money problems.
My husband and I have 5 kids. Our family is considered a “Team”. Our kids are paid for certain jobs around the house. They cannot spend their money right away. Each one is well-trained and know to split their money into Tithes, Immediate Spending, Short-term Savings, and Long-Term Savings(College).
My daughter is not quite 2, so we haven’t gotten real technical yet, but we practice identifying coins when we empty our change into the family’s big coin jar!
I’m a Children’s Pastor and also a HOme Childcare Provider plus mom to 2 teenage sons. We love Dave Ramsey and have taken his class several times as refreshers. This would be great to present to my KIDS church group or to the kids in my daycare. Our teenagers already practice ‘Dave Ramsey’.

This would be so great! I have 4 children, and I need some tools to teach them well about handling their money!
We have the “spending/saving/giving” bank for our girls. We also keep a jar for giving to Haiti on our kitchen counter–any “found” money goes in there (as in, stuff that falls out in the washer or we find on the floor). We also put all big checks from b-days and Christmas directly into an account for education. The kids get so many presents, they don’t even miss it. The girls go coupon shopping with me and know that we rarely buy items that aren’t on the list and that we don’t have a coupon for.

I think it’s important for children to earn their own money, so they’ll have respect for the fact that if you want something, you have to work for it. They are more responsible in how they spend it when they have to earn it.

One way to teach kids about money is to teach them to tithe. It is just sweet to see a kid put $0.35 in the tithe envelope. It is important for kids to know how to give and not only receive.

We are allowing our children to “earn” money to spend on our family vacation. If they want a souvenir, they will learn to spend their own money for it. They can earn up to 25 cents each night IF they accomplish 5 bedtime routine tasks in an appropriate manner (ie no fussing, whining, goofing off, etc.) They earn 5 cents for each opportunity/task. This way it is not an all or nothing situation. They can work on specific behaviors/tasks and be rewarded for ones they accomplish appropriately. The trick is revealing the amount the NEXT day. Therefore, no arguments during bedtime.

My oldest daughter, who is 14, watched many of the Dave Ramsey videos with us when we went through Financial Peace several years ago. She is a Dave fan for life, now! I think the key is giving kids the opportunity to learn by experience, letting them make mistakes, but also guiding them towards better stewardship.

Financial Peace Jr. is awesome! We use it for our kids – ages 12, 6 & 3. All have different levels of chores and commission amounts. It’s really worked for us. If we win, I am going to give the kit away to someone in our next FPU class. Maybe the first person to cut up a credit card (and promise to close the account) will be the winner!

My husband and I just finished Financial Peace University and can’t wait to start our kids on it. Our girls are 4 (twins) and have been helping more lately with the grocery shopping. They are understanding that mommy and daddy have a certain amount of money for food for the week, and that’s all. They now know that we can’t go buy boxes & boxes of fruit snacks all the time!
I have one of these kits but my twins are almost 3-years-old so I will be needing two soon!

Kids “need” so much! Making it hard for a budget
We were just looking at this for my son, he just turned 4 yesterday! We have heard it’s fantastic, and did FPU ourselves last summer.
The most important thing we have taught our children in that the money they have in their pocket is not 100% theirs until they have given their tithe of 10% back to the Lord. Then they must be accountable for the portion that remains.

We give our kids coins (2 and 3) and have them put it in their piggy banks. There have been times we have pulle dthe coins out to show them how many coins it costs to buy things (like a shirt, doll, or certain groceries). It gives them a concept of what things cost in their terms of money.
Our son is 3 and has one job right now, he knows if he does his job a gets a quarter.

Our 5 and 2 year olds earn time as part of their commission. Then cash in their time for TV or Computer. It’s a great way for them to earn something that they really look forward to.

When raising our children we did not have any financial training ourselves so we didn’t really teach our children financial wisdom. As they got older we went to a Dave Ramsey seminar and got out of a lot of debt. We have tried to teach our adult children some basic principles but they are only about half receptive. We are not raising our two nephew ages 5 & 6 and want them to grow up with as much financial wisdom as possible. This would be such a great help and a wonderful blessing.

We are having our 8 year old watch financial peace university with us. Our 5 year old really is starting to get the- you work you get money- you don’t work you don’t have any money. Our two year old doesn’t understand yet, but we are talking about it as a family.

Honestly, I haven’t started much budget talk with my 2 1/2 year old or 5- month-old yet, but we have TSPs set up for them already and want to instill wisdom (tithing, thriftiness, contentment, and selflessness) in them from the get-go. They each have a little piggy bank, but don’t really understand the concept yet (obvious in the case of the 5-month-old:). We want them to grow with the mentality of “you’ve been blessed so you can be a blessing to others.”

Hi there! I heart Financial Peace University. Our two girls are 4 & 5 yrs. old, and they help me cut out coupons and are tasked with tracking them when we go shopping. I like “k”‘s comment on her bedtime routine tasks. Hmmm…will put it in action tonight. 🙂
We have encouraged our son to save for the things he wants with his chore money. We have offered extra incentive by price matching as well, much like a 401K plan! =) He is learning the value of working hard, earning money and being smart with his money.

Once my husband has lots of pocket change, I roll up the coins with our helper. Since most of these are pennies, our 4 year old is learning to count the coins as we place them in the rolls. She carries it happily to the bank teller to exchange for quarters which go into her piggy bank at home.
I use coupons frequently, so she now asks do I have the coupons before we leave home. She sometimes asks if we have a coupon for an item before she loads it in the cart. She’s a very sweet helper.
I don’t have any tips. We just make sure the kids have their tithe and save and spend jars. Everytime they get money they have to put their money in each of the jars.
I work for a Workforce Investment Program with High School Juniors and Seniors in Eastern KY. I am a certified Financial Counselor through the LAMPO group and I teach Financial Peace for the next generation to my participants. I would love to have a copy of the Financial Peace Jr. for some of my student’s small children and/or siblings and I too am having my first child in about 3 weeks so having this and starting early teaching her about money would be wonderful!

Oh! We would love this! We started our Baby Steps at the beginning of the year and would love this for our kids.
A simple thing I can say for a tip for kids is when they want to spend money, make sure they know what they want to buy before they go to the store. If they don’t have a plan, they will spend it all! (same goes for me!)

Love, love, love Dave Ramsey! I have already started my 18mo old a savings account. She has a piggy bank at home that when full, we put part in tithe, save and spend. I know it is early but she loves putting money in her bank and pretty soon she will understand tithing, saving and spending as well.

Starting this year fresh – allowance for chores not part of daily household responsibilities, extra for doing above and beyond, special bonuses for specific school goals – that is their “job”.
Trying to also point out what’s marketing and does the value it portrays really make a difference for their life. Fun is fun and has a place, but not all products marketed to them is worth their money, time, attitudes, etc.

This would be great for my boys! Currently, we are trying to introduce budgeting to them with the 3 envelopes (spend, save, give)—that they use for their allowance money.
Don’t wait until it’s too late! I have one adult child who is excellent after starting the Dave Ramsey program and one adult child who is still into instant gratification. My goal is to help teach my 5 grandkids before it’s too late & bad habits are established.

We’ve given our kids chores to earn money. Our teen saves for items he wants while our 6yo just saves to save the money, with no intent to buy anything.

My kids are 4 and 3 and they have jobs and can earn money. They get paid every Friday and have to put a % of their $ earned into savings. The rest is up to them to either spend or save toward something large. Our 4 yr old likes to save up 2-3 weeks worth of “pay” so he can get video games and legos. So far they are doing pretty good with budgeting their $.

We have been working on budgeting with our kids & this would be a great tool to help reinforce some of the concepts that we have been teaching them.
I have my 10 year old son working with me on odd and end jobs for my father. He gets a small percentage of the earnings, we split into 3 categories, tithe, savings and spending. He is eager to work for cash.

We are realizing that our children learn more about money management (or the lack thereof) by how we as parents treat money. My husband and I are currently working on getting out of debt. As we share with our kids our goals and dreams, they are learning to become more responsible with their money so that they can realize their dreams, too.

I have an almost four year old and an almost one year old. Haven’t started anything “financial” yet, ut this would be put to good use. My church put my husband and I through Financial Peace University and it changed our whole way of thinking about money!
My niece really needs this!
Our 9 yr old has a dog walking job and she does like to save! We encourage her to tithe 10% each week and the rest she does what she would like (at least for now). Typically she saves everything. Occasionally she will find something she would like to buy or buy for her little sister (so sweet).

I give my kids allowance and then take out for saving, giving, and investing. The rest goes to spending and once it is gone, they don’t get more until next allowance.
My husband and I have gone through FPU and still have debt to work through. We have two kids – 13 and 12. This would be great to have so we could start them on the right track!

I am helping to raise my nephew, and the other day he saw me and my wife doing our dave ramsey fpu budget. Well he asked us if he could help and I told him that I would give him a budget sheet and I will help him with his budget of his weekly allowance. I think this product is a great way to teach kids how to deal with money. Whether it is his $10 dollars a week allowance or a birthday money. This program could help him understand!

I would love this set to help me teach my girls the value of a dollar and how to manage money. We try to discuss money and costs with our 4 year old but I’m not sure that she gets it. Last week she told me that dad didn’t buy (organic) milk because it was too pricey. It was a good decision because it was on sale the next day:)
We’ve made terrible financial decisions in the past, and slowly trying to make our way out. Now we’re trying to teach our 4 kids about smart money management. Most times feels like hypocrisy seeing as we don’t have nearly all of our stuff in order. But we know that it’ll be worth it.

I don’t have tips for teaching kids right. That’s sad because I have four kids. I can teach the Word of God to them & social interests & education on varying subjects. But, this topic, I don’t have a clue and that is pre-cise-a-ly why I am hoping to win one. I only enter to win something when I really want/need the item being given away. God knows, I really need help in this area.

I try to teach my kids when they receive money that they should first tithe 10 %, save a portion, and the rest they can either spend or save.

Our boys are very young, but our 3 year old does work (raking leaves, picking up sticks, etc) and earns money to save up for new Thomas trains that he likes.

So I have four children; 14, 11, 4, 2. The 14 and the 11 have had the misfortune of learning some of our bad habits and us not taking the time to teach them our good ones. We have changed that within the past year. The older three all have compensation charts, give jars, save jars, and spend jars. They all also have savings accounts in which they get to see the balance every month and they can deposit at any time.
The older two were able to buy Christmas gifts this year for myself and their mother with their own money. My 4 year old bought some things with her money throughout the year and it was the best time of my life not to mention hers. She would not even let me help her to buy the stuff. She told me “I got it daddy.” I love it when they get it.
We have 3 kids that fall in this age range. We really need something to help us explain monetary things to them on their level. We have a hard enough time teaching ourselves. ; )
I have not hints…I’m at my wit’s end with my 8 year old and his desire for more stuff. This would be a great help!

I am trying to help my girls, 14 and 16 with learning about money. They babysit and do 10 % tithe, 10% savings and 10% for a big purchase and the rest for things they need or want.
They used to do food with friends but realized that is money just wasted! Yahoo, one learned lesson!

My 5 year old got a cash register from her grandmother for Christmas and we have just started working with her understanding the value of money. I’d love to move onto the next step of teaching her about saving, giving, spending, etc.
We have some jars set up for the girls, one for saving, one for spending and one for tithing. Works good for my little ones!
We have been teaching our kids about money using Dave’s principals on budgeting and give, save, spend. This set would help with that.

My husband & I have coordinated & taught 2 Financial Peace classes; and we are huge supporters. The wisdom God has given to Dave Ramsey has helped our marriage tremendously – especially since we grew up so very differently. (I grew up with nerds for parents: ie: savers/ tightwads… my dad retired at 59 with a fully funded retirement plan. My husband’s parents spoiled him rotten… as their only child, he was given everything he ever wanted & then some.)

I completed Financial Peace University last year and it was life changing! This will be a neat resource for me to share with my 3 daughters. Being a single mom, finances are a daily subject in our house and I am working to teach them to be better stewards of what God gives to us and to learn from the mistakes that I have made with money in the past.

I have facilitated a FPU and learned a lot. I have always wanted to get the Jr edition for my 7 year old and have it for when my 18 month old is ready. We have started the 3 envelope system with her, save, spend and give. At the moment she is not motivated to earn money, but I’m sure the day will come soon.
My boys have a responsibility chart, and they can earn 5 cents/job each day. From their daily earnings, they have to split up their money between savings, spending, and giving. We talk openly about budgeting, using DEBIT cards and CASH, and we can tell our 6yo is already picking up on that. 🙂

Just started the Total Money Makeover….this would really help to teach our 4 and 7 year old girls what we are trying to do!
Just started going through one of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Studies and excited to learn more. This week we learned about what we can start doing with our daughter. I really like the Save, Spend, Give envelopes. We will be starting to teach our daughter about working for money very soon by doing chores around the house and also doing some without pay as well. As I am learning more about managing money better and paying off debt I can’t wait to teach my daughter about money in these ways too.

Great giveaway! When our son was 3 he wanted a scooter. He did a variety of things to earn quarters and saved up enough to buy his own scooter. We talked to him about the difference in price if he got it on Craigslist vs. new. He saved enough to buy a used one but we were so excited to find it on sale at Toys R Us and he got it NEW! A great lesson learned!

My husband and I have taken FPU two times (we needed a little gazelle boost!) and LOVE it! We are teaching our son the importance of saving and tithe. He earns money for potty training and being a big helper. He gets to choose where he puts his money, either in the piggy bank or the baggie for tithe. When he puts it in the baggie for tithe he says, “mommy, I’m praising God!” it is so fun to see how excited he is to obey God and to save money! His birthday is tomorrow too so we will be adding some bday money to the savings account!

We are following what Dave says about how your children should work to get paid. I have a chart and if my daughter does a certain chore around the house she gets paid for that chore. If she wants to buy something she uses her money. If she works she gets paid, if she doesn’t work she doesn’t get paid. The chores are things that are not expected of her, cleaning her room is expected of her, making her bed is expected of her so she does not get paid for these things. She will get paid if she makes her little brothers bed or our bed. So far so goo. We are also memebers of TMMO and will be debt free in just a couple years!! Love Dave Ramsey!!

I don’t have advice to share, but would love some. My grandkids do not understand anything about saving. Money burns a hole in their pockets. I like to spend too, but how do you make them understand they need to save too?
I make sure my kids know the difference between wants and needs…and when either are being contemplated….carry it further and have them calculate how long I would have to work…or they would have to work to purchase the item

This looks really great for kids! My kids each have the type of piggy bank that separates their money into savings, spending, tithe (3 different models). One thing that I am always amazed by is how much easier it is for my kids to tithe than it is for me and my husband. That child-like faith is something to aspire to!
I find that using 3 see-through piggy banks for the kids’ categories helps them see the progress they are making towards their goals.
I follow Dave on facebook as well as listen to his podcast. Ever since my husband and I took the FPU course I have wanted to get this Jr kit for our two boys. We would like to start teaching them more about money and savings beyond just their piggybanks. =)
We teach our kids on a daily basis about budgeting. If we are at the store and they want something that isn’t on the list, I explain to them that we make a list so we won’t buy things we don’t need; so we can save money. Also, every time our child earns money we help them divide it up into tithing, savings, and spending money.

I always try and encourage my kids to give money to Jesus via a tithe or giving. It reminds them (and me!) that everything we have belongs to Him. 🙂
My kids get an allowance, split 3 ways. 10% (or .25) is to donate to a charity of their choice. 40% ($1) has to go back into their savings account, and 50% (1.25) is theirs to spend as they want. I don’t buy them toys anymore, and they have to pay for their own activities. It’s a small start, but it helps. They also know about coupons and sales, too.

I haven’t really started the budgeting thing with my son yet as he is still pretty young, but my old boss told me what she did for her girls on vacation and I thought it was great. She gave them each a certain amount of money and they could spend it however they wanted…they even bought their own food. She said one of her daughters figured out that if you ordered water with your meal it saved money and she had a lot more left over to buy souvenirs or something she wanted than her sister.
I would love this to use for my 6 and 4 year old kids! Haven’t started teaching them a lot about money yet so this would be a great time!

Talking about finances and budgeting with my son is difficult as he doesn’t understand the value of a dollar. On the otherhand, it’s so much easier to talk about with my daughter (who’s younger) because she gets it. It’s very frustrating at times because I don’t want my son to fail at budgeting and managing money.

I would love to do this with my son! He is just 3, and received gift cards as Christmas gifts, he selected several clearance toys at Target, instead of the first thing that he saw. It was an eye opening experience for him. Now he understands why mommy loves to see those little red stickers at the grocery store!

My husband and I have $0 debt, and we would like to teach our 4 year old (and our 1 year old) how to manage their money. This material from Dave Ramsey looks great!
I think children should learn how to spend their money wisely and learn the importance of saving. I am very frugal and I hope to pass that virtue along to my children at a young age. (That’s my little piece of wisdom.)
We are trying to teach our 2 year old the value of money and where it comes from (apparently, like most toddlers in line at the grocery store next to the candy bars, he seems to think $$$ grows on trees). We have a list of chores that he has to complete each day and at the end of the week, we look at all of the chores that he has completed (now before you think I’m a slave driver, it’s all pretty basic stuff- “helping” me feed the chickens, setting silverware and napkins on the table at dinner time, picking up all of the sippy cups, ect). If he finished ALL of them, then he earns $2 for his piggy bank. If he didn’t finish all of them, then we base how much he gets on what he completed. he thinks it’s great and when his bank gets full, we will put half in savings, and the other half he can use for something that he wants that he has worked to earn. Wish me luck!
my son is 8 and when he goes to spend his $ and it over $10 he looks at it and we go home and think about it then look and see if we can find it cheeper. we usaly give him some thing to save for too, like a vidio game legos.

We teach them using their own currency. It did not take long to figure out how things worked when we used M&Ms and Skittles as currency. They could do things to earn the candies, buy things with them, give them away, etc.

Simple stuff – Our kids, ages 7, 9 & 10 have their own money.. They get $3/ week for doing their duties. .30 is tithing, 1.35 is savings, (something big… like breaking their violin bow!!… or maybe a car… who knows!), and 1.35 for spending. So they each have these little spending jars. Well, our kids NEVER ask us to buy them something in a store, on vacation, even food. They know that they have their own money. It completely eliminates that asking.

As soon as your child is old enough…Introduce a compound interest chart. My son is a great saver and when he was little he put all of the money he received in the bank to earn “free money”…
Last week we started chore charts with our three kids ages 9, 6, and 4. You don’t do the work, you don’t get paid. They can earn up to $6 per week each.
So far so good. It’s eliminated a lot of frustration on my part. After one week, they were asking when they could earn money again!

Best tip for my 3 and 5 year old would be giving them chores! We give a nickel for each chore so they have to count by 5’s to see how much they have! They have to learn to count AND can watch their money grow by doing chores that I need help with!

My oldest is only four but I’m really wanting to start her on the DR plan! One thing I have done with her is that when she ruined a new pair of shorts we had just bought (by doing something careless) I had her do an extra chore to pay for them. At that time I also got out a bunch of change and explained that it represented Daddy’s paycheck. We talked about all the things we have to pay (rent, electricity, water, food, TV, etc.) and how after we pay those things we have some extra. We have to decide what to do with that extra. If we spend it on clothes and those clothes get ruined, we don’t have extra money left to buy more clothes. I asked her if we should not pay rent or electricity or buy food so we could replace her shorts. Of course she said no and really seemed to understand. We bring it up form time to time when she is also asking for lots of stuff. We explain how we have plenty of money to buy the things we need and some of the things we want if we are careful with it.

The rest, they are free to spend or save. I’ve never done your program but have heard alot about it from friends. I’d love to learn more. My church is going to the KC one day conference you’re doing in Missouri coming up. I’m hoping to be able to attend.

In the past, I have been so proud of my kids. My oldest, 4 years old, could look at something in the store for a few minutes and would willingly put it back and sweetly say, I’ll just put this on my birthday list. She was easy to distract and understood she couldn’t buy everything. Now she wants at least one thing every store we go into. Probably doesn’t help we are fresh off all that Christmas shopping. She does understand that we buy things on sale and with coupons and even plays with them in her kitchen, but we are moving into a tough area where she has a hard time delaying gratification. I would love to start off right with a good system by Dave Ramsey.
i don’t have much experience with budgeting and kids but this would certainly help! working with high schoolers at our church really makes me want to start early with my little one!

I have Dave’s book and would love to win the Jr pack for my kids.
We recently started using a check register to show my 7 year old how to add his money that he gets from chores and deduct for savings and giving and money that he spends. I would love to start financial peace with him.
The best ways to teach children about fiscal responsibility? MODEL fiscal responsibility! When my children see a commercial on TV, and exclaim that they want it and they want it NOW, I respond one of two ways: “We can add it to your wish list [a list of items we would like to spend money on].” OR “Oh, that’s just not in the budget right now. Let’s add it to our wish list to see when it can be added into the budget.” If children observe their parents practicing self-control, they will learn that as the norm!
When my kids were growing up I had a school clothes/shoes budget well below what most kids would consider “acceptable”. I made sure that they knew how much we had to spend and showed them how to make it stretch by visiting outlet stores and clearance racks in the nicer stores. They learned that by shopping well, they could have nice “brand name” clothes without spending big money. Today they are grown and they are very frugal in their shopping habits. I am soooo proud of them.

We give our kids $2.50 each week. They have to save 10% (a quarter) and tithe 10% (another quarter). They can choose where to put the other $2 – in savings or in spending.
My husband and I had just had a conversation about how we need to be more faithful to teach our children about financial stewardship, and then I checked your site and saw your Financial Peace Jr. post! We currently use jars for tithe, saving, spending and giving (other giving to needs our child hears about, in addition to tithing to our church) for our older child. Whenever she receives money as a gift or earns money, she divides it among the jars, according to predetermined percentages.

I wish I had some good tips to pass on. We taught our kids about budgeting and how to live within your means. Unfortunately…it didn’t really stick. They have found out that learning the hard way isn’t much fun. I would love to win this to share with my younger son.

We have 3 piggy banks for our now 4 year old. One is giving, one saving and one spending. Each time he earns or receives money at least 10% goes into giving (if not more). We want him to remember, it’s all God’s anyway! Then he can choose to spend or save the rest. He usually spends about $1 at dollar tree a month – he’s really into puzzles and has been building up a collection – and saves the rest. We’ve opened a savings account for him, so any he chooses to save can earn interest.

To help our boys (ages 4 & 6) save the money they earn or are gifted, we mark a day on the calendar that daddy will take them shopping…otherwise the money just burns a whole in their pockets. This allows them to actually see how their little bit of money can accumulate & gives them something to look forward to.

We try to be good role models and set good examples when it comes to money in our family. Our children have seen the benefits of working, saving and spending wisely. They know that we have never paid a credit card fee or interest to the credit card companies. Hopefully, just living in a house where the parents are responsible will help them in the future.

My little boy isn’t quite 3 yet so we haven’t really started much other than the piggy bank, which he loves to put coins in. In a few months we plan to start a small allowance and use the three jar method. Teaching him to determine what he will give, save and spend. Would love this to get him started off on the right foot.
We’ve had a heck of a time trying to shift our 4 year old away from material things after a Halloween birthday and Christmas. My plan is to start Dave’s plan when our daughter turns 5, but I may need to start earlier!

My husband and I were blessed to have been a part of FPU in 2010 and now would love a chance to teach our 4 year old life lessons to carry on our changed family tree!
We LOVE Dave Ramsey. We are debt free including our house! We have begun to teach our kids (8 and 4) about money. They receive a commission and put some in their envelopes for church, some in savings, and keep some to spend. Proudest mom moment regarding this: When my 8 year old put the 50 cents he is required to put in savings and put the rest of his money for the week in his church envelope and chose not to keep any of it to spend!
Need ideas! Have an almost 5 yr old. He has started to figure out money gets you stuff, but how much you need he hasn’t figured out yet!!!

We have our children use a “think about it” time period before buying. They must tell us why they want a certain item, that they have enough spending money to buy it, and then we have them wait about 2 weeks. Many times they decide they really don’t want whatever it was by the end of the 2 week period or else they have totally forgotten about it. We have learned so much from DR and would love this product to help our children find financial peace too!

We just started teaching our 7 year old daughter about tithing, saving & spending. It really makes her think about a purchase when she has to use her own money! This will be great to continue teaching her!
We just started giving our boys an allowance. This is money not tied to the chores that they are expected to do. We didn’t want to get in the habit of paying them for everything they did around the house. They tithe at Awana on Wednesday nights.

I use a book called “Coin County” to take my 6-year old about money. Denomination, saving, tithing and more!
We just helped our kids open bank accounts to see the money they add grow. They are trying to set a goal for saving.

I don’t have much experience teaching my 6yr old daughter about money. However my husband and I are currently reading Dave Ramsey’s book and applying his teachings to our finances. This would be a great way to involve the whole family.

We use the bank that’s divided in thirds – 1 shaped and labeled as bank, 1 as store, and 1 as church. Kids divide money and deposit i each section of the bank equally.

We talk to our 10 y/o about prioritizing expenses/purchases, as well as budgeting down to the last penny, so that when we go to the store and she wants something, we can go back to our conversations to determine whether or not we can make the purchase. It is of course a work in progress.
My kids deposit the money for their savings accounts themselves, they fill out the deposit slip, take it with the cash to the banker, and interact with the banker for the transaction.
This would be great to start teaching my 5 year old about saving! She always wants wants wants. I want her to save save save!

My children use the save/spend/tithe envelopes.
We love Dave Ramsey! We give our kids an allowance and make them purchase their “wants’. They tithe 10% to our church and then are free to spend their money as they please (within reason). We tell them that they need have all the money they want for a particular item before we allow them to buy it….we don’t make up the difference. 😉 Our favorite saying to them is “beans and rice, rice and beans” just as Dave says!

We have been doing the spend/give/save envelope system with our kids for a while now. We just started FPU at our church two weeks ago and love it.
This is a great idea since my 4yr old thinks a few penny’s can buy all kinds of things. I hate telling her we don’t have the money for something……her respons too that is “I have money”, but how do you tell her that a couple of bucks does’t buy much.
I let my children see me use coupons, they help look for, cut and also shop using coupons. They are not only practicing math but savings and how to shop. They are also 8 & 10 so they are learning young! My daughter now uses coupons and looks for them on her own! They also are learning a want and a need.

My tip would be to make kids work for their money…never just give it to them
My husband and I have been doing Dave’s plan and want t start teaching our 3 children to be responsible with money so they don’t make the same mistakes we made. Sure hope we win a kit!
We give allowance, but have no system in place to help them budget or save. I need to change that, & really want to learn Dave’s system w/kids. We started Dave’s Total $ Makeover for ourselves in October, and it has been life changing! Now I want to train my kids early so they’ll be good $ managers & avoid a lot of greif!
I need to start talking to my little girl more about saving, etc., but I did take her with me to the bank last year when we opened up a special savings account to save for Walt Disney World, and every time we went back to put more money in I showed her the pass book (which I had to ask for, as they normally do it electronically now). She got to see the savings grow, and it culminated in our trip.

I think the best way to teach kids about money is living it as an example. We followed Dave’s plan to get out of debt and save money. We still use the envelope system even though we have been out of debt for two years now. We hope our children can follow what we show them in our lives.

All of our five (soon to be six) children have savings accounts. They receive allowances for extra chores and deposit their earnings into their accounts. Our older children also earn money through home businesses, such as sewing and alterations, babysitting, and yard work. Our older children balance their books each month, while we help the younger children with theirs. We also started having our older children pay for their extracurricular activities. They are highly involved with theater and they are creative in finding ways to earn scholarships/discounts to be able to cut their costs. We also have our older children sit down with us each week when we pay our bills. We have them calculate how much electric or water we have used, then have them write the check out of our account to pay the bill. They finish the process by putting it in an envelope and in the mail. It has made them more aware of leaving water or lights on.
It’s hard to teach what you’ve never learned. I’m just learning all of this now and this would help me teach my little ones! Thanks!

My kids (10 and 8) have responsibilities and get allowances. They are expected to save a portion, give a portion and may spend another portion. They are very responsible and understand that if they don’t have the money for something, they can’t buy it. It’s cute to watch them “share” and make “deals” with each other!

We haven’t done much money management stuff with our kids yet. I have been listening to Dave Ramsey’s cds in the car. DS (age 7) is listening along and asking some questions.
I set up savings accounts for all of my kids when they are born. They have cards for their account and we do the statements every month and they keep track of their accounts

You “start teaching” when you start living the process. I am so proud and happy of living the Financial Peace way. My kids wanted $4 each to see a musician that is performing at their school. We have a snack poster on our fridge and the kids have to “pay” for their snack. Well I haven’t figured out how to teach myself about money so am wondering how to do that for my 3 year old. I learned if you have it spend it and that’s not been working too well so I certainly want to teach him something new.

Our son has jods that the earns money and jobs that he does because we are a family, when he gets payes he puts in envilopes. He cant just so but any toy he has to think about it 1st, and go home and wait, to see if he raly wants it or it just looks fun in the boxs.

Ever since we took the FPU class, I’ve been looking forward to using this with my daughter !
This is an awesome way to reinforce what I have learned by attending FPU ..only difference is my Twins are getting the information 30 years early!

Would love to win this and start using with my daughter once she is old enough. Right now we are learning the names of coins.
We look forward to teaching our 5 year old about saving money. He already enjoys giving his “outgrown” toys to those less fortunate.
I would LOVE this kit to teach my 5 year old how to manage her “allowance” & learn to SAVE for something she really wants. Thanks for offering this.
