Do you use coupons with non-sale items?
So, one of the first principles of using coupons strategically is to use them on a sale item, right? The key to saving the maximum amount of money is to not be brand loyal and to purchase whatever product is on sale and that has a matching coupon.
As with anything there are a few exceptions! There are a few key items that we like and would purchase whether on sale or not, and even if we don’t have a coupon for them. There are two instances where I would use a coupon on a non-sale item:
- Item Never Goes On Sale – I will use a coupon on an item that I know never goes on sale. For instance, I have a favorite brand of salad dressing (even a special flavor) and it NEVER goes on sale. But, I found a coupon for it. So, the next time I went to the store I purchased it with the coupon, NOT on sale.
- Coupon is Expiring – If I have a high-value coupon for an item that we prefer and the coupon is about to expire, I will go ahead and use it on a non-sale item. Sometimes the high-value coupons can create a “sale” type of price for the product.
