Eating Healthy on $40 a Week
1. Eat Seasonally – Fruits and vegetables in season. Use sales to mass prep fresh produce to use later. i.e.) – organic potatoes for fries, carrots, strawberries/bananas/blueberries for smoothies
2. Meats– Look for your lean meats on sale, and purchase more and freeze it. i.e.) – Ground turkey at $1/lb, purchase 10lbs, and freeze to use later
3. Prep Ahead – Find whole wheat flour on sale, make pizza dough (calzones), homemade whole wheat rolls, biscuits, etc and freeze for later. Prepackage snacks like – dried fruits/nuts, fresh veggies (carrots), make homemade hummus (for dips), premade waffle sticks
4. Homemade – We skip a lot of meals out, for two reasons they are more expensive and less healthy. I make most of our meals at home, and preferably from scratch. Less additives and preservatives, sugars, and refined products.
5. Canned/Boxed Items – Use sales and coupons to get canned items like tomato products (sauces, diced tom), beans or cereals at a low price. As with other items, purchase a lot on sale to use for later.
6. Meal Plan – KEY!!! You must meal plan, so you have enough healthy food on-hand for quick snacks. Prevents last minute nights out to dinner, if you have all dinner items in the pantry/fridge.

Can you tell us how you prep your bananas and strawberries for the freezer? Do you soak the bananas in any kind of citrus juice to prevent browning?

I just cut the bananas and freeze immediately, it prevents the oxidation (browning). See my post here on my mass prep for fruits!!

I have been trying to find more info on the web about which fresh veggies you can freeze and how to do that. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a good resource. Any suggestions?
I will do a little research, but I’ll tell you a little about what I do. Go here to see how I prep fruits, but I use this same concept for carrots, celery, green peppers, etc.
I usually grill chicken breasts that I buy in bulk from Costco during weekends and freeze them to save time during the weekdays. During weekdays, I use these and combine them with salads or use them for simple, healthy sandwiches. I’m just so glad that my six year old loves grilled chicken breast with good old tomato ketchup. What is your opinion of canned tuna, such as Chicken of the Sea? You can buy it cheap (in bulk) but I’m curious if this is something that can be categorized as healthy. What’s your take on this?
I think tuna is just as healthy as many other fishes. I have nothing to base that on, but remember some posts I saw on it. Might want to “google” it!! Thanks for reading!!
I have a huge challenge because my husband doesn’t eat chicken, turkey or salmon. He only eats halibut, cod and beef. This is a challenge in itself when trying to save money. Any suggestions for me. He does love pasta! I tend to make alot of tri tip due to it feeding our family of 5 and I can get it on sale at certain times. Any suggestions for me? Thanks!
You want to try to stockpile (buy a lot when it’s at a good sale price) the halibut, cod and beef. When the meat goes BOGOF or the fish goes on a great sale, get a lot of it and freeze it. Be sure to ask if the fish has been previously frozen. If it is previously frozen in the case, ask for some already frozen so you can take it home and keep it frozen. Do the same for pasta, purchase it when it is on sale, you can stockpile TONS of this, also purchase it on sale AND use a coupon to get it FREE sometimes!
I highly recommend meal planning to cut back on unnecessary, and costly trips to the grocery to prevent impulse buys. When you have a stockpile to pull from, you can meal plan around what is on sale and what you have on hand. Then, only purchase necessary items like (milk, produce) plus the REALLY good deals that week. Make sense?
