I am going to start my first year of homeschooling in the fall, and I definitely need any organizational help I can get!
To stay organized is a constant battle. Currently I use a number of calendar/planners to be sure I cover my bases. I keep the master calendar in my office. I keep one in our homeschool room. And I always keep one in my purse. Once a week(usually Sunday) I check them to each other to make sure I haven’t missed anything. I’m sure there is a better system but this seems to work for me.
My best way in staying organized is sticking to my plan and staying focused. We norm school Sept- May and hit it hard so we will be done. Both my kids and I enjoy and thrive during the summer break. Yes, we do some stuff during the summer but no where near as structured. Mainly just keeping up with times tables, reading, interesting science and history jaunts that I tailor to what my kids interests are at the time. We ‘try’ to have our schooling done by lunch everyday as well but that doesn’t always happen, they sometimes have carry over homework that needs to be finished. I have realized on those days to have them take a break so their chores can be accomplished in a timely manner and I am not waiting on them to finish their chores. To free up my time so I am not ‘schooling’ all day I sit and focus my involvement with them first for every subject that I am needed so I am free to tend to the household and my 2yr old.
If only you knew how disorganized I am halfway through my first homeschool year! I would love to have some direction on organizing my lessons and day with the kids.
This is my third year and I am just now figuring out what really works for us. My girls are in 2nd, K, preschool and a 1 year old. I find flexibility to be KEY in our home. My husband works in retail and his schedule is never the same, so we try to adjust to him as much as possible. It’s also very hard to stick to a strict schedule with that age range. Sometimes we don’t start school until after lunch. But, it works for us:-) I do try to do devotion/bible right after breakfast no matter what. We use My Father’s world, so the bible is built right in to the lesson plan. Then we do seat work. (core subjects…math, reading, writing, spelling and Spanish) We do our read-alouds for history and our science after lunch when my 1 yr old is sleeping (she is just too distracting otherwise:-) If they finish their seat work they are free to play. Sometimes one plays with the baby while I finish up helping another. We work together on chores each day. We have used various chore charts….my absolute favorite is the Chorganizer. I highly recommend it! Currently we are not using any chart system. We just needed a season in my house where they just did what i asked them to do when I asked without any reward other then knowing they are a necessary part of the balance and function of our home:-) I have also used the Chorganizer to help train them to be more independent workers. I’ll share that tomorrow:-) This is a great giveaway!
I stay organized by using whiteboards and folders. I have one whiteboard that lists his chores for the day, which always includes schoolwork, and he is to complete the chores in the order I list them (mostly because I still have to remind him to brush his teeth morning and night!), and he gets a star for every “chore” he completes. I have one of the weekly schedule whiteboards, and I write each day’s assignments on the board, in the appropriate day. I have a folder for each day, and I put all of that day’s worksheets and instructions in that day’s folder, and put them in a cabinet. He can work on them one day at a time, or all at once, whichever he chooses. We’re still VERY new to homeschooling though, so I look forward to reading all of the responses 🙂

Homeschooling is a task and you must keep your focus each and everyday. One way we do this is to use some of the FREE downloads from Donna Young. She offers a great lesson planner page and other HS items. Another item I can’t live w/o is my calendar! It is a must. With us being in 2 HS groups and other activities I have to know who needs to be where and when.
I have looked at this planner many a time. I would LOVE to give it a try. It looks like something I would just love! I’m so glad to see you offering this to use HS mom’s!
Thanks!!!
I’m actually just starting to “think” and plan for future homeschooling of my soon-to-be 3 year old. So I could definitely use a planner to help me along!! 🙂

I love reading the ideas posted so far. One way we stay organized with homeschooling is to keep a “digital portfolio” in addition to our traditional portfolio. This includes links to sites we have used for school work, pdf’s we have studied or reviewed, digital scans of ticket stubs or other mementos from field trips, digital recordings of my daughter’s progress reading aloud (into the microphone), memory work, etc and pictures my daughter has taken of things she wants to remember from homeschooling. The traditional documentation we maintain to meet state standards & compliance but I love having a digital “memory box” to really show her progress for myself. The kids enjoy it as well.
Are you kidding? I am always looking for ways to organize my organizing. I not only home school but i also run my husbands remodeling business and I am the Director of Ballet at a Conservatory. How do I keep it all straight? I have 4 calanders/organizers. I need just one! Always looking for the perfect fix! Thanks for a great website! I check it daily!
I will start homeschooling in the fall, so I would love to read everyone’s tips on how they stay organized to get some ideas. A daily planner would be great to get started! 🙂
I have been homeschooling for 10 years now and for the biggest thing is to stay up with grading work and filing it right away…not that it happens that often :-/
I printed out my own sheets to track the material/hours we homeschool.
We are praying very hard to seek God’s directions for Homeschooling. Staying organized is one of my big questions I have for veteran homeschoolers. I will read others comments and gain their wisdom.
I stay organized with Homeschooling by having a set “time” to do everything. (It happens this way most days!). We also do our lessons in the same order everyday. It helps set a routine, and lets my daughter know what comes next.

I use a planner to keep up with assignments, but I also use folders labeled with the days of the week. I take the worksheets out of the notebooks and put everything I need for that day in the folder. I have 2 weeks worth and this saves time each day because it is all right there ready to go.
Thank you for this opportunity.
This organizer would be very helpful this fall when we start homeschooling.
I didn’t see a form load up. This would be great for sisters. I’m also considering hs this fall.
Thanks for offering this! I just became a fan on facebook 🙂
To try to keep organized as I homeschool our 9-year-old quadruplets and keep up with our two year old, we utilize several methods. We use “jurisdictions” for our chores, which I incorporated from JimBob and Michelle Duggar (18 Kids and Counting). We use many aspects of Teri Maxwell’s Managers of Their Homes. I attend our local homeschool curriculum fair (MTHEA) every year in May, which really helps me to get motivated and organized for the coming year. My husband and I work hard to select curriculum that works best for our family. Just having the right curriculum is a big help in organizing! I’ll share more tomorrow! (Kids are reading silently now, so it is my time to prepare for our next subject and then read aloud to our toddler!)
I use lots of notes and folders. I am old fashioned and have to see it on paper! I teach m kids how to schedule their own time and study and record it,
Yes, I guess I’m not the only one who needs this. 🙂
But I don’t see the separate form…let me know..

Jennifer, the form is back up. Sorry!
We are fortunate that we can devote an entire room for our classrom. Instead of using lots of bookshelves we used the scrapbooking cubes (you can get them at Michael’s very inexpensive) …everything has it’s place in these cubes! And the kids have their own cubes for their books and supplies. Plus it looks cute and neat!!
I love planners and am just entering the world of homeschooling. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks!
Staying organized is always a challenge especially with three very small children. I am looking forward to homeschooling my oldest this fall for his first year of school and plan to focus on establishing a routine each day of a few things and then adding more and more as we go.
I use a dry-erase board to list tasks for each child each day. This is kept on the wall in the kitchen where each child can check off their accomplishments as they finish them. This helps so much, since I don’t have to keep reminding them about what they need to do. They know they have to finish what is on their list.
I am new to this, my oldest of 3 kids being only 4 years old. Thank you for the opportunity, I have a heart for homeschooling and love any way to become more organized!
I am not that organized – that is why I need to win. 🙂
My biggest thing I have learned in the last 5 years is that we have to stick to a “morning” schedule for HS. If we do not get done by lunch then it usually doesn’t get done. So except for a few exceptions, we start around 9 and are done by 12 to 12:30.
Each of my five kids has his/her own special color that we use for everything! I have small circle stickers (like garage sale tags) that we use to label all of their stuff, so that we can very quickly identify everyone’s items without having to spend extra time writing names on everything. We use the colored stickers on everything from consumable textbooks, 3 ring binders, crayon boxes, water bottles, etc. When I can I buy items in each child’s color like pencil boxes, spiral notebooks, even plates and cups! This is a huge help to us in keeping things organized and manageable. Even my two-year-old knows which pencil box and notebook is his. In addition, each child has his or her own fabric bin from Target on shelves in a nook in the kitchen. In the bin, each child keeps his/her own pencil box, notebook, scissors, Bible, etc. And, of course, we use tons of lists to help us stay organized and focused. There are so many details to manage in homeschooling, parenting, running a household, couponing, etc.. I couldn’t make it without my lists!
We use calendars and plan books to stay organized. We will be needing a new planner in June for the beginning of the new year! 🙂
At the end of every year I put everything I want to keep to use in the future in a storage bin. I label the bin with the grade and put it away in a special closet. That way it’s never too far or out of reach. As the next child enters that grade it’s all right there for me to unpack.
I homeschool a Kindergartener and a 2nd grader. I also have a 2 year old daughter as well. While I try to stay organized, I don’t always succeed, that’s why I need the planner. It’s funny, I just showed this to my husband because I’d really like to get it!
Hello,
Thanks for the opportunity to win a Home Schooling Planner.
I could definitely use one. One of my goals is to be more organized this year and
the Planner would definitely help.
Debbie
This is my first year homeschooling so I am just working on an organizational system. But right now, my system is a binder with page protectors and we document everything we do and put it in the binder. We’ve done two binders worth so far….
Barret…love the colored cirlce idea!
I realized I do a lot of little things to organize our schooling. I posted it on my blog if you want to check it out http://joyfulcreations2.blogspot.com/
(sorry, don’t know how to link it up, yet 🙁
I am also going to look more at this new work box sytem I stumbled across the other night. I think it is going to be a great system for younger learners! Just search the blogs for “work boxes” and you should find lots of info.
To all of you starting out in a year or so….take it slow and easy! It’s so easy to get overwhelmed! You’ll find what works for you! Blessings to all of you!
