Healthy Living on a Budget: Educating Yourself

by Kelly on July 2, 2010 · 3 comments

One thing I’ve learned in trying to live healthy on a budget is that I need to know why this is worthwhile. Doing something because everyone else is doesn’t give me the ability to stick with something new. When I educate myself on why I want to live healthy on a budget, it gives me the confidence to move forward..

I am working on taking the Healthy Living on a Budget series one step at a time so I don’t burn out. Needless to say, I am reading, reading, reading. Why? So I can determine where the right place to start for my family to begin and have success. I’ll be leading you through our journey, but it might look different in your home. Below I am sharing some links to books that I am reading, and have been recommended to read by friends and my readers.

Here are a few to get you started…

A must read is the Eat This Not That series and especially the Cook This Not That. So many times we buy convenience foods and we don’t know what is in things we buy. A lot of times people look at calories, sugar, fat and they don’t look at the sodium. This series really tells you what to buy at the grocer, what to order when you go out to eat (which everything is loaded!) and what to cook at home. It really has changed our life. I really look at the sugar and sodium.

You HAVE to read Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food. It takes a scientific and common sense approach to the way Americans have been eating for the last 100 years and offers practical advice about how to determine what to feed your family. Plus he’s an excellent writer! Check out the reviews on Amazon!!
