I think it’s timely right now with summer in full swing to talk about modesty. It’s something that I grapple with every day with my daughter, who is only seven years old. Her curiosity is natural, but her questions are not easy to answer. This time of year especially, she sees the majority of women baring a lot of their skin, whether we are at the mall or at the pool. She doesn’t understand why I’m telling her she can’t do the same.
“Modesty isn’t about covering up our bodies because they’re bad. Modesty isn’t about hiding ourselves. It’s about revealing our dignity.” ~Jessica Rey
One of the main struggles I have with this issue this time of year is that the mainstream fashion world is against me! Little girls face the same offerings as the big girls do when we go shopping: shorts that are too short, shirts baring the midriff, off-the-shoulder tops.
“Little girls would not be running around in sexy underwear and skimpy bikinis if it wasn’t for their parents buying it for them.” ~Jessica Rey
Let’s face it: It’s difficult for modest moms to find modest clothing and swimwear for themselves and their daughters. Jessica Rey of Rey Swimwear chose to address this issue and create an alternative. I really like her swimwear line, and I love how she explains the issue of modesty in the video below. She’s not simply explaining her own personal opinion, she’s sharing what scientists discovered in studies that revealed how certain fashions and clothing options affect men’s brains. This video is definitely worth watching. I’d love to know what you think about it!
How do you respond to the question Jessica asks at the end of the clip? “We were made beautiful, in His image and likeness. So the question I’d like to leave you with is, How will you use your beauty?”
