CVS

  • Has their coupon policy available on their web site. They reserve the right to change their policy at any time.
  • Does not double coupons. They are redeemed at face value only.
  • Accept competitor coupons only for prescriptions in the pharmacy department (example: Rite Aid/Target/K-Mart gift card for new or transferred prescription).
  • Accepts coupons printed from the Internet. They must have a legible barcode that scans at the register.
  • If the coupon does not scan at the register, the cashier should politely inform you that we are unable to accept your coupon. They do not allow manual overrides at the register for coupons printed from the Internet.
  • They allow 1 CVS coupon + 1 manufacturer coupon per item. They should allow you to use ECB (Extra Care Bucks) in combination with other CVS coupons since these are coupons you have “earned.” In addition, they should allow the use of “offer at the register” coupons which would be an open offer of $3 off of $15 or a certain dollar amount off of a specific item. Since their registers are programmed to only accept 2 coupons (1 CVS, 1 manufacturer) per item if the number of coupons exceed the items purchased, a manager will need to override the coupon.
  • You can use coupons towards a clearance item but the coupon will be adjusted if it is more than the price of the item.
  • The BOGO coupon allows you to purchase 2 items and get them both for free. With the manufacturer’s coupons you can combine one with one CVS coupon. You will be responsible for any tax due.
  • Two coupons may be used on a BOGO Free promotion as long as it does not exceed the item total.  BOGO promotions may also be combined with BOGO coupons.
  • Rain checks can be issued for items out of stock. They can also issue ECB on a rain check item. They never expire. Most stores will accept manufacturer’s coupons with the rain check, even if the coupon is expired.

Table of Contents

Publix

NOTE: This is a general “guideline” for the majority of Publix stores. Since each store varies in their acceptance, you should check with your store customer service or manager for their specific store policy on competitor coupons. The Policy is different in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee than in  Florida and coastal Georgia.

Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee:

  • Does not have an “official” policy.
  • Doubles manufacturer’s coupons up to face value of $.50 every day.
  • Does not double Publix store coupons or competitor coupons.
  • Does not limit the number of like/same coupons that you can double. The register is programmed to require a manager’s approval when the coupons total over $50 or when you have more coupons (store and manufacturer together) than items.
  • Accepts printable coupons.
  • Does not accept printable coupons for a free item if the value is over $5.
  • You may use one Publix store coupon and one manufacturer’s coupon per item, unless either coupon explicitly prohibits it.
  • Accepts competitor coupons from traditional grocery stores within a 5 mile radius. The individual store managers decides which stores to accept as competitor.
  • Some stores will accept a competitor + Publix + manufacturer coupon for the same item. Most stores do not.
  • Some stores accept drug store coupons as competitor. Most do not.
  • Do not accept any expired coupons.
  • You may use 2 coupons for B1G1 sale items if you buy 2 items. You may also use a store and manufacturer coupon for each item as well.
  • With B1G1 sale items you do not have to purchase 2 items, each will ring up as half price.

Florida and Coastal Georgia:
Most of the above applies in Florida and coastal Georgia. However, here are some differences:

  • They do not double any coupons.
  • You must buy 2 of the BOGO items to get the sale price. You must buy 2 items, one is full price and the second is free.
  • Many stores will not let you use coupons for both items that are B1G1. You can still use one store and one manufacturer, but not 2 of both.

  • Their coupon policy is available in a printable copy. It might be a good idea for you to take it with you during your shopping trip.
  • Does not double coupons. They are redeemed at face value only.
  • They do not accept competitor coupons.

  • They allow 1 Rite Aid coupon + 1 manufacturer coupon per item.
  • They allow you to use “total purchase” coupons (example $5 off your $25 purchase). You may use more than one total purchase coupon, but they need to be separate transactions & each transaction must meet the minimum purchase requirement.
  • Since their registers are programmed to only accept 2 coupons (1 Rite Aid, 1 manufacturer) per item if the number of coupons exceed the items purchased, a manager will need to override the coupon.
  • You can use coupons towards a clearance item but the coupon will be adjusted if it is more than the price of the item.

Walgreens

  • They do not have an “official” coupon policy.
  • Does not double coupons. They are redeemed at face value only.
  • You can combine manufacturer’s coupons and store coupons (found in the weekly ad, online or coupon booklets throughout the store).
  • Walgreens issues Register Rewards with certain items as a promotion.  They are like cash, but are a manufacturer’s coupon.  Generally they expire 1.5-2 weeks after issued.
  • Total number of Register Rewards and manufacturer’s coupons cannot exceed the number of items.  Walgreens’ store coupons are sometimes not considered part of your coupon total, but this varies.  Example: if you buy 1 bottle of Dish Soap with an in-ad, store coupon and a manufacturer coupon, the register might beep and not let you continue.  You need to have a second “filler” item in your order to keep the items vs. coupons number the same.  It can be anything from a candy bar to a ten-cent pencil.
  • Store coupons may be valid for multiple items.  Example: a coupon that states “Dish Soap 99¢, Limit 3? will adjust the price for up to three bottles of Dish Soap to 99¢ with one coupon.
  • You can usually use two coupons on a Buy-One-Get-One-Free sale.
  • Walgreens does not handle the issuing of Register Rewards.  Any questions or issues you have, you can call the Catalina company at 1.888.8COUPON and give them the numbers on the Register Reward.
  • Register Rewards cannot be used to pay sales tax.

  • $50 or more in coupons per transaction will require approval from a manager.

Thank you so much for making this all-in-one-place handy guide!! I was hunting Kroger’s policy versus Publix since an experience yesterday at Kroger’s left me baffled when they wouldn’t “stack” a manufacturer with an e-coupon on my Kroger card — and they’d been doing it for TWO MONTHS. Now, thanks to your handy-dandy list, I can see that it must have been kindly clerks overriding, because it truly is not their policy. I’m bummed, really always loved Kroger, but looks like Publix/WalMart, here I come!! Thanks again for your help. God bless!!

Does Walmart let you “stack” your coupons, using an e-coupon with a manufacturer coupon? I thought they only allowed one e-coupon (if it is a store coupon) and one manufacturer coupon per item. I don’t think they let you use an e-coupon and manufacturer coupon if both coupons are both from the manufacturer. Plus Walmart does not double coupons period. Walmart is good for price matching other competitors, but when it comes to coupons, you seem to lose out because they don’t double the coupons. Let me know if their coupon policy allows you to stack coupons. Thanks.

Walmart does not have an ecoupon policy, so it will not apply at Walmart. But typically you can’t use and ecoupon with a manufacturer coupon on one item. This is because most ecoupons are manufacturer coupons and you can only use one manufacturer coupon (whether ecoupon or paper coupon) per item. I hope this helps.

WalMart may not do much with coupons, but if you find similar item for lower price elsewhere they will automatically give you that price. In a sense it pays to shop around on internet.

Say Amazon has an item on sale–Walmart will match that price–just tell cashier you found that item at X price on amazon.com. Don’t need ads or anything.

Walmart actually DOES honor competitors coupons, with the exception of the following: dollars/cents off a specific retailer, Percentage off, bogo free without a specified price or double-triple value coupons.

Thank you for all the good info! I’m hooked, cannot pry myself away from this website. Anyway, I just took my “first” Kroger trip. They do not double ecoupons that are loaded onto your Kroger card. Such a bummer. They wont allow an ecoupon + a manuf. on the same item either. And they make you swipe your card before taking your paper coupons so the ecoupons always get used first. So make sure to remove ecoupons from your card if you have a better paper coupon.

Krogers online coupons are listed as not combinable with manufacturers coupons. I have been searching for more information regarding this fact as the Extreme Couponing show has shown the ladies using both types of coupons. Clearly at the bottom of their web coupons it says does not combine.

Reply

If you purchase 5 boxes of Cheerios, and you have 5 Cheerios coupons, you can only use 2 coupons maximum. You couldn’t use the other 3 because they have a limit of 2 coupons per “like” items.

Reply

23 Melanie Spaur August 5, 2011 at 10:59 pm

But the Kroger guidlines don’t say they accept “2 maximum on like items”, it states “2 internet manufacturer’s coupons”, so when I read that is is puttinly a limite only on the coupons printed from the INTERNET. I think Kroger needs to revamp their policy!!!

Kroger was featured on “Extreme Couponing” and the lady on that episode was from Georgia and used both her digital coupons (loaded on her Kroger Card) and manufacturers coupons. Their website says that they do not allow that and when I tried to use both, I was told that I couldn’t either. What Kroger location allows customers to use both? I will drive wherever I need to to take advantage of that. Please advise. Thanks.

Kroger has updated their policy. Your point “Allows e-coupons in addition to manufacturer coupons (Shortcuts, Cellfire, etc.)” unfortunately is no longer valid. They have replaced it with …

“Digital offers cannot be combined with manufacturer paper coupons on the purchase of a single item.” See their website http://www.kroger.com/help/Pages/digital_coupons_policy.aspx.

This is so frustrating, because the computer will automatically deduct the first thing in the system. Which means if you have an eCoupon for 70 cents and a paper coupon for 50 cents (which would double), you don’t get a choice if you have already put your card in – the eCoupon is first.

There is a way around this, but it requires a little more planning and two transactions. Open another Kroger card in your husband’s name and don’t load any coupons to that card. If you have a paper coupon that is better than the eCoupon, do a separate transaction for that item(s).

I had two Crest Toothpastes and two .75 cent mfg coupons after I scanned in my Kroger Card. The staff member I could only use one mfg coupon because Kroger’s card recognized that I had a electronic Kroger coupon on my card. I know for a fact that I did not. So I did a separate transaction with a different Kroger card and it accepted the coupon. Is this correct. The staff member kept telling me that what I was doing was against the law. I felt so embarressed for nothing. It doesn’t say anywhere on their policy about using one or the other Kroger coupon or mfg coupon when purchasing two of the same item. I went home and checked to see what electronic coupons I loaded on my Kroger card and there wasn’t anything for Crest Toothpaste. Is this correct? How does it work with Kroger’s ecoupons vs mfg coupons on multiple items that are the same? Can we only use one mfg coupon on two of the same items when using Kroger’s discount card even if we don’t have an electronic coupon loaded to the Kroger card? How does this work?

31 Amy July 17, 2011 at 9:59 pm

I keep a printed list of my ecoupons loaded to my Kroger card and the coupon policy (many cashiers really don’t understand their own policy) for this very reason. And I often make two transactions with two separate cards so that I can take advantage of mfr. coupons. Some stores are getting particular about how many items you can buy at once, but that shouldn’t have been a problem for you. Hope you have better luck next time.

I was at Kroger last week and had a bag of bugles and 2 bags of chex mix. My ecoupon for the bugles came off for my chex mix and the manager wouldn’t take my chex mix coupons because of that. Even though I had 2 bags, he should’ve still took 1 of them. So, I got screwed!

I could understand a limit on freebies but I am having trouble understanding putting a limited on printed manufactor’s coupons.

New changes to the Kroger policy are spreading throughout the country …

Check your region for application!

1. No more double coupons – this stinks mega time for some people. Thankfully, for me … the Delta has not made this change.

2. Maximum of TWO Internet coupons per manufacturer … NOT per item! This has gone in effect in the Delta. Also this is per person, per day. Which means they will not allow multiple transactions. But some stores may read this policy differently. Check with your store before you load the cart!!

3. Maximum 5 MFRs per like item, per customer, per day. Again, no multiple transactions. And this is designed to keep people from clearing their shelves. Yes it is their job to stock the shelves but they order based on demand and most stores get one delivery a week. So … they are trying to be fair to everyone.

That’s it … Wish you would apply these changes above so no one gets confused. :-)

Hi, I live in Washington and my region does not have a Kroger, but we have Fred Meyer’s that carries the Kroger brand. Can I print coupons from the Kroger site and use them at Fred Meyer ?

Several websites have made mention to the 2 coupon per computer. What is this ?

Also wanted to say thank you. I am new to the coupon nation and must say that your website has done a marvelous job clarifying things. So far this month I have easily saved over $125 bucks using paper inserts, and e-coupons. Both my husband and I used coupons for each of our vehicles saving $30 bucks when we got our oil changed. My husband surprised me when we went to Fred Meyer & he asked me if I had a coupon for a jacket he wanted. Because of the store sale & news paper coupon, he saved $40. it’s fun getting him involved. We’ve made a game of it.

Once again, your site is awesome !

Kim, which coupons are you printing from the Kroger site? I’m only aware of the e-coupons that you can load to your loyalty card. If they’re a manufacturer’s coupon (even if it has a Kroger logo), it should be able to be used anywhere. However, I am not familiar with the store policies of Fred Meyer’s. I would recommend asking at the customer service desk if they will accept them.

In regards to the 2 coupons per computer, that is a security measure that is set up to limit the # of prints for all printable coupons. So when you print a coupon (like a coupons.com, bricks, etc) you click “print the coupon”. You can then click your browsers back button to print it a 2nd time. If you try to do it again, it will tell you that you’ve already printed your limit.

Thanks for the encouraging words! I’m glad you & your husband are enjoying the couponing process!

The Krogers in Louisville, KY have stopped stacking coupons. If you have a coupon loaded to your card it will not let you also use a manufacture coupon. Since e-coupons don’t double, I stopped using e-coupons all together.

I had a terribke experience at Wal Mart last night. I am very knowledgable when it comes to Wal Mart coupon/price matching policy and know what I’m doing when I go in. My husband, myself, and our two young daughters went in for our weekly shopping trip. We spent 3 hours couponing and price matching. We got to the counter and the cashier told us they no longer price match a Publix circular if it is bogo. My girls were exhausted and hysterical and my husband was angry. We had to walk out and leave a cat with nearly $200 in groceries sitting at the check out because no one would help us!!! We called a manager over who was very rude and informed us that bogo ads were a GIMICK!! We left before my hubby got too angry! LOL! It’s devatating to spend that much time shopping to be told you can’t use something when you know they are wrong! I immediately came home and pulled up their coupon policy only to find I WAS right as long as a price is specified on the bogo ad!!! I was livid!! We came home with no food!! I will never go in Wal Mart again and I have been shopping there since I was a kid. I would rather pay a little more than be treated like that. I guess when you are a multi billion dollar company us families who struggle and clip coupons to make it aren’t very important to you! :( Sad!!

Print off WalMarts coupon policy and keep it handy along with the one on ‘printed off the computer’ as the cashiers will argue with you, give it back, keep it and not take the value of the coupon off (check your receipt and keep track of the coupon and value at all stores) or tell you they do not take computer generated coupons (this was cool when I started using their mag All You and their coupons). WalMart does not do BOGO in ads–too costly for them and they don’t have a genius working the register. I would like to tell PAM who lives in Texas and shops HEB, that some of their offers are priced higher to off set the cost of the ‘COMBO LOCO’ deal.
Please be aware of certain ‘come ons’ that stores do to get you inside. I personally shop HEB for some better deals like a certain brand of Mayo, WalMart to comparison shop since they carry about the same products as other stores and Sams Club for meat and TP and a book every other month. Kroger is for Boars Head Garlic Bologna and nothing more since they do not doble any more, sad for us. Thank you for writing this blog.
