Q & A Friday: How do Buy One Get One Free Coupons and Scenarios Work?

on December 17, 2010 · 4 Comments

Reader Shannon asks:

With Buy 1 Get 1 Free coupons, can you buy 2 products, use a B1G1, and then another $1.00 off coupon?  Also, if you have a Buy a Body Wash, get a Razor free coupon, can you use that, plus a $1.00 off body wash, plus a $1.00 off a razor?

Shannon, that is such a great question, and it can be a little tricky if you don’t know all the ins and outs.  Here is how it works:

Buy One Get One Free Coupons
When using a Buy One Get One Free (BOGOF) coupon, you can use one coupon for the item you are purchasing then the BOGOF coupon for the free item, so you can use two coupons for the two items. Let me show you in an example to help you visualize it.

Buy 2 Gillette Razors — on sale $1.99/ea
Use a BOGOF Gillette Razor coupon
Use $1/1 Gillette Razor coupon
Final Price:  $.99 for both razors

You use the BOGOF coupon to get one free, so your total is at $1.99 for both razors.  Then for the razor you paid for, you are using a $1/1 coupon, which brings your total down to $.99 for both razors.

Buy One Item, Get a Different Item Free Coupons
On the second scenario you asked about above, you can also only use two coupons.  Here is how it would work:

Buy Razor and Body Wash
Use Buy Body Wash Get Razor Free Coupon
Use $1/1 Body Wash Coupon
Final Price:  Cost of Body Wash after $1 off

In this scenario, you again can only use one coupon on the free item, the one that got it free.  So you can’t use the coupon for the free razor and a $1/1 razor coupon too — use one or the other.  Then you can use the $1/1 Body Wash coupon since the coupon was for the razor.

I hope that clears things up a bit! Just know that when using a BOGOF coupon, you can use another coupon on the item you paid full price for.

Now, after saying all that, you also need to know that this is also subject to the store managers approval.  If he says no, he is under no obligation to use them both.

Note:  Q&A Fridays will take a break for the holidays and resume on January 7th, 2011.  Wow, I can’t believe it is almost here!

Hmmmm….I think the first scenario you present is YMMV.

If you have a B1G1 MQ, that coupon requires 2 items to fulfill the requirements for the coupon. Some stores would see the additional $ off coupon as having “2” coupons attach to one item.

Karen – I have only had that happen one time in my experiences, and asking a manager they allowed both coupons. Most stores allow 2 coupons with 2 items.

        Thanks for your quick reply.

I have had problems with this….and I always try to coupon correctly. I also don’t like hassles at the register 🙂
