I liked Kenmore on Facebook AND I would really, really like an Ipad2. 🙂
I liked Kenmore on Facebook. My waste no food idea is to take overly ripe bananas and freeze them either in the skin or peeled in a freezer bag. Take them out, and they are ready to make a smoothie or banana bread later.
Thank you! This is a value we work hard on to enstill in our children. BEGIN WITH TALKING ABOUT IT. My husband grew up in Africa, where any table scraps were joyfully taken home by his house keeper and shared with her family. My first trip to his home, I was ashamed of myself when I saw Ethel scrape what I hadn’t eaten into a dish for herself. At every level, we need to raise our awareness of waste, and only consume what we need.
So for our kids, I start with small portions and set the expectation that plates are to be cleared at every meal. My kids (4,6,8 years old) have learned to make sensible choices for themselves now, and they even know that if something is not finished in their lunches, they should save it for snack later that day rather than throw it in the trash can at school.
I am deliberate when I cook and shop. I buy just enough, enless the plan is to have left overs. If someone is still hungry, we suppliment with extra salad greens or bread.
Here are some other tips:
When cook brocolli, I save the stems and cook them seperately for a brocoli cheddar soup. If I’m not ready to do it immediately, I blanch it and freeze it for another time.
When I make pesto, I freeze it in ice-trays and then place the cubes in an airtight bag in the freezer. That way I can use smaller, indiviual portions.
When my tomotoes are beginning to go off, I make tomatoes provencal by roasting them with garlic, herbs and olive oil. With apples, I make apple sauce. Bananas, banana bread, and so on.
Challenge yourself to not use the garbage disposal, but compost instead. You will become accutely aware of how much we naturally send down the drain, and by composting, you are not wasting.
Basically, set expectations for your children, and then live by them yourself.
I liked Kenmore on FB and my plan is to be better at meal planning so I don’t waste any more food.
Hi I liked Kenmore on FB and what we do is use our leftovers for lunches at work the next and I freeze as much stuff as possible. Even if its not enough for another meal, it can be added to more leftovers to make one later. 🙂
