Well, I have to say—chatting with our online Bible study group was great! We had a wonderful time together, and I was so pleased with how everyone contributed. It was like we were all sitting in a room talking together.
Here are the questions we discussed, along with some of the comments I picked out from the chatters. I would love for you to leave comments below with your own thoughts.
Question 1: What was your reaction when you read the definition of idols on page 13? What were your first thoughts? How did it open up your personal view of the idols in your life?
Ivette: The word functional god was pretty new to me because I never thought of dedicating myself to my work and not leaving enough time for god was really my functional god.
Abby: It really struck me that it is something that masters or rules us and that we serve, and that it can be something that in moderation is good but it’s our response to it that make it an idol.
Jessi: For me, it brought home the fact that idols aren’t just these ancient little statues that the Israelites worshipped when they thought God has abandoned them.
Question 2: Why do you think God addresses idol worship in the very first two commandments? (Exodus 20:3,4)
Susan: I had never thought about this before. Even after all the yrs I have been reading the Bible, but know I see. All the others hinge on this. If I worship an idol, then God is not first and following the others will never work.
Clarice: I think being aware of idols helps us to put God first!
Question 3: How do you think it is significant that the author points out that skilled craftsmen were called upon to make the people’s idols?
Susan: This one had me a bit stumped and all I could think of is that satan’s tricky. I call him a slippery little sucker. He’s the father of lies so he tells me this or that is the answer to my problems or life, or whatever, but it’s God. Those were my first thoughts. Wrong or right. He’s crafty.
Betsy: This makes me think about how one person’s worshipping of an idol affects others, almost as if it is infectious.
Kelly G: I can relate! It’s almost like I need a quick fix…instead of going to God, I go to friends, internet, etc.
Abby: @Kelly, I think that in turn leads to more acceptance of idols as it’s seen as commonplace in the group.
Question 4: Which of the verses on page 26 stood out the most to you and why?
Susan: 2kings. My idol happened to be a substance. And looking to that, which was useless, worthless, created a life which was the same. I had Jesus but my life was a wreck. Felt useless
Melanie: It’s like what starts out expensive quickly loses it’s worth
Jessi: I often treasure or take something that seems good in its own right and make it my idol.
