Now that we are well into the new school year, it’s time to start thinking about what’s next on the list: the holidays, of course, and all the hustle and bustle that go with this time of year. In order to keep up with all the excitement, you need to be sure your car is fully winterized and ready to take on the challenges of the winter season.
Check Your Tires
One of the first things to do is check your tires. If you find you’re in need of new tires, Hankook Tires is offering an $80 rebate on the Ventus S1 Noble2.
Check the tread depth. The National Highway Transportation Safety Board has determined that treads should be at least 1/16 of an inch deep to be safe. However, tire experts agree that it’s even better to go with 1/8 of an inch deep.
The Penny Test for Tire Tread. Take a penny and insert it, Lincoln’s head down, into the tire tread. If any part of Lincoln’s head is covered by the tread, then you’re okay—you have a legal and safe amount of tread. But if you can see above his head, or if you can read any of the “In God We Trust” letters on the rim above his head, then it’s time for new tires.
Check your tire pressure. Cold weather will cause you to lose a little of your tire pressure, so when the winter weather settles in, pump up your tires.

Make a Travel Safety Emergency Kit for Winter
I think most of us think about emergency kits for our homes, but we need to get the same mindset for our cars. After all, you’re in it so much it is like a second home. While no one wants to think of worst case scenario situations, you’ll actually feel better if you know you’re prepared for them. Be sure you have these emergency items stowed in your trunk or backseat this winter:
- Blankets or sleeping bags
- First Aid Kit – Make sure it at the least it includes:
Pain reliever/fever reducer
Antiseptic
Bandages
Cleansing towelettes/hand sanitizer
Tweezers
Thermometer
- Knife
- Flashlight
- High-calorie, non perishable food (Pop Tarts, cereal bars)
- Bottled Water (formula if there’s a baby on board)
- Jumper Cables
- Windshield scraper
- Bag of sand (or kitty litter) and a shovel – Use this to provide traction if you get stuck
- Compass/Road maps – GPS doesn’t always work, especially if you get stuck in a remote area or if weather conditions interfere with satellite services
More Tips
Replace your windshield wiper blades. You don’t think about your windshield wiper blades until you need them. A fresh set can be invaluable when wintry precipitation occurs. Replace them now for the winter season.
Check your fluids. You’ll want to check your car’s fluids including oil, antifreeze, and power steering fluid.
Keep a full gas tank. It’s actually better for your car, your gas mileage, and your peace of mind.
