What if your kids focused on serving one another this summer?
The family is the first place kids learn. It’s no wonder that God puts all different kinds of personalities together in a family, so that we learn how to accept, learn from, and yes, serve all different kinds of people.
Every week this summer, give your kids a chance to serve each other as well as Mom and Dad by putting everyone’s name in a hat and drawing. Have each person try to keep the name of the person they draw a secret all week, and serve each other, sort of like having a secret pal. Kids can:
- Bring Dad a cup of coffee
- Put Sister’s bike away
- Clip coupons for Mom
- Do a sib’s chores
- Play with the baby
- Make someone else’s bed (even if you don’t make your own!)
- Let their sibling have first choice all week
- Give their sib a game, movie, or CD of theirs
- Make a gift for a family member
Moms serve all the time, of course, but you should still get on this. You can also draw a name and think of ways to secretly serve your family in creative ways. At the end of the week, have a special pizza night, sundae bar, or game night and reveal who was serving whom.
Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people… (Ephesians 6:7 NIV)
Talk about how it felt to serve with no thought of being repaid or even if you were angry with the person whose name you drew! This is sure to make for some great conversation.
