Free Printable Summer Reading Charts
We are in full swing of summer here and that means LOTS of reading! I love to read and thankfully that has started to bleed over into my kids lives. We have a lot of fun at night during our read-aloud time.
Now that they are reading, we have started setting goals for each, depending on their reading level. For instance. my 8 year old reads chapter books, but my 6 year old is reading his readers. Each gets points for reading. I let them get points for any reading they do in a day, as many books as they want. Our library has these great little gadgets called “Playaways”. I let them include those on their charts, but they don’t hold as much value as actually “reading” the book. I want to encourage reading, and if we pick the right audio books, they are still learning a ton, but just listening. Also, it doesn’t hurt their listening skills!
One thing I have implemented is read aloud time together. They can get points for reading an age appropriate book to their sibling. I love this idea, because it encourages reading, language skills and best of all together time!
Below are some great charts you can print off and use to help track their progress this summer. I like to laminate mine and they use stickers or dry erase markers to keep track.

Rewards & Incentives
Make these charts your own by awarding points that are age appropriate. If you see your kids getting discouraged at hitting their goals, you might want to assign extra points for longer books so they can hit a goal quickly. The purpose is to encourage reading and reward them for initiating reading on their own.
Some of our favorite rewards are:
15 points – Ice Cream (Sweet CeCe’s, Chick fil A, etc)
30 points – Stay Up Late
45 points – Date Night with mommy or daddy
What types of rewards and incentives do you give your kids for reaching their goals? I would love some new ideas!
