This week’s Publix Penny Item is:

Publix Grape Juice, 64 oz (White or Purple)

You need to spend $10 or more and can usually just ask for the item, but there is a Mystery Penny coupon in most Wednesday ad inserts.

::Be sure to check out this  week’s Publix deals and coupon matchups.

So, what are your feelings on the new Penny Item Day?

I’m really not liking the new penny item day. I’m at work all day and it is nearly impossible to get my shopping list and coupons together in time to get to the store before it closes. Sundays were much better because I had a few days to gather things and go shopping on a day that I don’t have to work.

I hate the new Publix penny day. It’s inconvenient because you’re forced to plan your grocery shopping trip the day that the sales ad comes out and a lot of us don’t get the Wed. paper. Guess it’s helped Publix cut down on their own costs though since it’s made it nice and inconvenient for most people to take advantage of it.

I subscribe to the Sunday paper, and they started including the Wed. paper at no extra charge. You might want to call and see if this offer is still available.

I agree. Last Wednesday I went in and bought the deals, picked up the Penny Item, went to check out and they asked for the coupon. They have NEVER asked for the coupon. Usually I have it b/c I clip it from the Sun. paper but we don’t get a Wed. paper and so didn’t have one. The assistant manager who bagged my groceries said Publix is now enforcing the policy that you must bring the coupon to get the Penny Item. Guess they were losing money. Oh well. Now they are probably losing some business b/c I don’t go grocery shopping on Wed. and won’t start if there is no Penny Item incentive. Sorry! I’m a little bitter!

It must be a regional thing to require the coupon, but our customer service folks at our area stores have said if you ask the cashier, they will give it to you without the coupon. They will no longer offer to do so, but if you ask they will here. I’m grateful.

I was told by a manager not too long ago that Publix was giving away millions of penny items each week, and they needed to cut that down substantially. He also told me that they no longer keep extra stock in the back or up on top of all the shelves because it costs too much to do so (and it’s true, because all the extra products on top at all of our stores are gone). He also said they’ve been told to limit BOGO items and raincheck items to 4 total (or 2 deals if a BOGO) because of cost. The last thing he told me is they will no longer double coupons that state not to. (I was actually denied the doubling of these internet printable coupons recently: Betty Crocker frosting, Chex Mix, Idahoan potatoes, Betty Crocker Potatoes, so I nicely asked they be removed from my order).

I agree it’s an inconvenient day, but on the upside it’s really good for seniors who need the penny item cost savings and do shop on Wednesdays to get the 5% discount. I confess I’ve been upset as well, however I have to remember it is a gift that they don’t have to give. If you are inclined, you might write to corporate to kindly express your wishes of at least being able to get the penny item without the coupon or that they make it more convenient to obtain. I have to agree I probably won’t go out of my way to shop on Wednesdays, and Kroger has been getting a little more of my business lately.

I love that we can share stories and express feelings on here. Couponing is such a roller coaster! But, overall, it ROCKS! 🙂

I worked for publix for years… they are truly a great company to work for and to shop from. I’m sure the “penny” deal up in this area was an effort to get new customers in the store and compete with the existing grocery store market. Publix still is an incredible grocery store chain. Publix is fairly new to the alabama/tennessee area. As you know they do not offer this deal in Florida… as there is no need… becuase there is a Publix just about outside of every large subdivision (not exactly) but multiple stores in each city. I’m sure they are on their way to phasing out the penny deal… so if possible, I would just enjoy the “blessing” while it lasts. Like most of you, I can’t make it there on Wednesdays..but just like every one else, they have to make a profit to stay in business.
