Organizing Your Food – Using Inventory Sheets

So, last week we talked about ways to get organized in the New Year and we are going to take that a little further this week! You need to start making room for all the items you are going to buy on sale in the coming weeks. The best way to do that is to clean out the places that you store your food… freezer, pantry and refrigerator.

1.  Clean out the freezer. Get rid of the freezer burnt waffles and 2 year old vegetable bags (yes you know you do!), and make room for the half price deals you find. Make space so can stock ahead on your staples when they are on sale, and you never have to pay full price again!

2 .  Freezer Inventory Sheet. Basically this is just a listing by category of what you have in your freezer. Separating by category makes it easy for you to determine what you have on hand to meal plan with.  For instance, you will look at the meat section to begin your meal planning since it is the biggest budget buster.  Use what meat you have on hand to save money and fill in with fruits and vegetables that are on sale and in season.

3.  Suggested Categories. Listing by category allows you to easily find items you need and plan efficiently so food is not wasted.

  • Meats
  • Breads
  • Vegetables and Fruits
  • Prepared Meals
  • Desserts
  • Misc.

4.  First In / First Out Method. Whatever food item went into the freezer needs to be used first. If you purchased chicken twice in January, you want to use the chicken you purchased first, that has been in the freezer the longest. To help myself out, I put the newest chicken BEHIND the one that is in there.  So, I am always reaching for the one that was “first in”, because that should be the one that is “first out”.
