Tax Free Holiday: State by State What You Can Buy

The Tax Free Holiday comes with its own set of interesting rules and regulations. Do you know what you can buy in your state? You want to know what the policies are in your state, so that you aren’t surprised when you get to the check out line. This holiday was created for families with students going back to school or college and those kinds of back to school shopping sales at its core, so in order to save the most money, you will need to keep that in mind. Even if you aren’t preparing for students who are starting back to school or who are getting ready to go back to college, you can find savings that will interest you.

Below you will find a state by state listing of what you are allowed to purchase that will qualify for the tax free discount.

Alabama

Alabama’s tax free holiday will net savings on these purchases:

  • Clothing under $100
  • School supplies under $50
  • Books under $30
  • Computers/computer equipment under $750

Arkansas

In Arkansas, the law applies to:

  • Any clothing and footwear (priced at less than $100 per item)
  • Accessories (priced at less than $50 per item)
  • School supplies

Connecticut

The Connecticut policy is limited to:

  • Clothing under $300 per item
  • Shoes under $300 per item

Florida

The state of Florida restricts purchases to:

  • Books, clothing, and footwear ($75 or less)
  • School supplies ($15 or less)

Iowa

In Iowa, you’ll be able to get:

  • Clothing under $100
  • Shoes under $100

Louisiana

The state of Louisiana offers a “general merchandise” tax free holiday with generous guidelines:

  • Purchases under $2,500
  • Excludes the purchase of taxable services, automobiles, and meals

Maryland

Maryland offers these restrictions to consumers:

  • Clothing priced at $100 or less
  • Footwear priced at $100 or less

Mississippi

Mississippi has these limitations, pay particular attention to the specifics on shoes:

  • Clothing under $100
  • Shoes under $100 – (Does not apply to skis, swim fins, roller blades, skates, and other things that may be considered footwear but do not qualify in particular as “shoes”)

Missouri

If you live in Missouri, be sure to take advantage of the savings on computers:

  • Clothing under $100
  • School supplies under $50
  • Computer software under $350
  • Computers/computer equipment under $3,500

New Mexico

New Mexico’s tax free savings days applies to:

  • All clothing and shoes under $100
  • School supplies under $15
  • Computers under $1,000
  • Computer equipment under $500

North Carolina

In North Carolina, you will be able to stack up the savings on:

  • Clothing, footwear, and school supplies under $100
  • Sports and recreation equipment under $50
  • Computers under $3,500
  • Computer equipment under $250

Oklahoma

In the state of Oklahoma, you will find tax free savings limited to:

  • Clothing and shoes priced under $100

South Carolina

In South Carolina, I haven’t found any monetary restrictions, just limitations on type of product:

  • Clothing
  • Accessories
  • Footwear
  • School supplies
  • Computers
  • Computer equipment

Tennessee

In my home state of Tennessee, you will be able to use the tax free advantage to purchase:

  • Clothing under $100
  • School and art supplies under $100
  • Computers under $1,500

Texas

The state of Texas offers the tax free discount on:

  • Clothing and footwear under $100
  • School supplies under $100
  • Backpacks under $100 for elementary and secondary students
  • BONUS: Texas includes layaway items

Virginia

In Virginia, the tax free back to school holiday lets you get the savings on:

  • Clothing and footwear under $100
  • School supplies under $20
