Primarily, this blog lists good deals, but this post is about inexpensive ways to make your home “A God Place”. Easy, simple ways to transform your home to emit the “aroma” of Christ.
My mom’s group at church is reading a book called “The Most Important Place On Earth: What A Christian Home Looks Like and How To Build One” by Robert Wolgemuth. To say it is helpful and inspirational is an understatement. It has given us so many wonderful ideas and inspirations for creating a home that represents all the aspects of Christ. A home that is peaceful, loving, inviting, comfortable, a refuge and “different” from any other home.
Out of our discussion last week on Chapter 2 – A God Place; we talked about ways we could create an atmosphere that helps us always see Christ. One of those ways were finding ways to hide the Word of God in our children’s hearts.
“Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” ~ Psalm 119:11
This excerpt sums up the ideas below that we brainstormed:
“Remember that filling your house with the scent of the Almighty – God”cense” – is just a matter of creating simple but intentional habits.” (excerpt p. 45)

Here are a few ideas we came up with for creating a learning atmosphere to teach our children about God.
- Use hymnals – Pick up a hymnal at a local thrift store and teach your children all the stanzas of your favorite hymns.
- Verse Tape – Use adding machine tape to write versus to post from the ceiling or on the door frames. This is great when trying to memorize verses.
- Glass Markers – Purchase markers that write on glass. Write God’s word (or let your children) on your windows.
- Verses on the walls – Check out a company like UpperCase Living to find verse decals to put on your door posts or blank wall space.
- Family Devotionals – We all agreed that the idea of planning and putting together family devotionals can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. But Mandy had a great idea to use a book called “Quiet Time” workbooks that teach the same story/concept across each age group. They have all kinds of fun activities that are age specific.
- Mealtime Conversation – Ask your children “What did God say to you today?”, I love this because it teaches them to begin to listen for God’s voice at a young age.
- Chalkboard Paint – Paint a wall in your home (we picked our laundry room) with chalkboard paint, just tape it off and give it a couple of coats. This is a place that we write out verses to keep our eyes on God. A great recommendation to put in the laundry room while folding or loading was…
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men”~ Colossians 3:23
What do you do in your home? I would love to see all the creative and different ways others work Christ throughout the thread of their home!
I love this book! Have recommended it to many mom friends. Worked with Robert way back when in publishing and find him to be a genuine guy.
BTW, I love your site and check it regularly! Am just starting with couponing and already seeing amazing results in my grocery bills.
This is a GREAT post. I just copied it and sent it to all the girls in my bible study. I have never heard of this book, and can’t wait to check it out!
Thanks!!!
