Crockpot Meals

::  Converting Recipes – Many recipes can be easily converted to be cooked in a crockpot, especially soups and stews.  Rice and pasta should be added the last hour of cooking, but do not decrease liquid.

** This chart converts oven and stovetop cooking times to crockpot cooking times. **

::  Use Cheaper Cuts of Meat
I don’t typically recommend using a more expensive cut of meat in a crockpot  i.e.) pork tenderloin or boneless chicken breast , because there are so many other less expensive options, that usually work as well – and sometimes better!

1.  Chicken – whole chicken fryers, split chicken breasts, thighs and drumsticks (Best Price:  $.79/lb or less)

2.  Pork – whole pork loin and pork shoulder (Best Price:  $.99/lb)

3.  Beef – chuck and top sirloin roasts (Best Price:  $1.79/lb)

::  Check out this Beef Roast Guide for more information on which cuts are best!

Tips:

  • Trim off any visible fat from cuts of meat. Fat will make the dishes cook faster.
  • Surprisingly, vegetables cook more slowly than meats in the moist heat of the slow cooker. So vegetables should be cut or chopped roughly the same size and placed in the bottom of the crockpot.
  • Liquids DO NOT evaporate during crockpot cooking.
  • Use whole leaf herbs and spices instead of ground for better flavor. Some spices, especially pepper, can become bitter over a long cooking time. Add those in the last hour of cooking for best flavor.
  • In the summer, sit it out on the back porch to keep the  house from getting hot!
