Saving Money on Lunch Box Food Items

::  Purchase convenience items on sale w/ coupon:  Only purchase convenience items when on sale and use coupons to get them almost 75% off.  For example,  Capri Sun drinks on sale at HT Super Doubles, use the $1 off Q to make them only $.29/ea!!

::  “Snack” size items:  Make your own “lunchables” or convenience snack items.  Use plastic snack bags or reusable plastic containers (i.e. – gerber baby food containers) to prepack.

Ideas:

  • trail mix bags
  • chips, cracker snack packs
  • homemade popcorn
  • homemade cookies
  • sandwich rolls (tortilla’s with sandwich fillings, sliced)
  • cracker, cheese, sandwich meat (homemade lunchables)

::  Stockpile the Basics:  Get them on sale and if necessary freeze to use later.

juice boxes                                           crackers                                   cheese sticks

popcorn                                               plastic snack bags                     tortillas (long shelf life)

(Freezer friendly items)

Gogurts/Yogurt                         lunch meat                               bread

::  Fruit and Veggies:  Incorporate whatever is on sale that week as your option.  Pick fresh fruit or vegetables that are in season, they are always most affordable.  Canned or pre-packed fruit cups can be found for less by utilizing sales and coupons.

  • frozen grapes
  • precut your veggies with ranch dressing or peanut butter
  • canned fruits: repack larger cans into reusable smaller containers

One thing that I started doing that saves me some money and time in the morning is making my own healthier/cheaper “uncrustables” for my kids lunches. I use the pampered chef sandwich circle cutter, put them in individual sandwich bags and freeze them. I will do a lot at once and it is so nice when I can throw them in for lunches or a picnic at the last minute. Surprisingly, they are not soggy when thawed and my kids actually prefer my version to the storebought.
