Summer is the perfect opportunity to jump start your kids’ interest in reading, or keep them reading if it’s something they already enjoy. Summer reading programs are plenty, so you’ve got lots of incentive out there in the form of prizes and awards! Check out this listing of 2011 Summer Reading Programs.
- Scholastic’s Summer Challenge lets kids log their reading minutes to win digital prizes. They can also enter sweepstakes for gifts like Klutz books and other fun rewards. Parents can register along with their children to track progress.
- Pottery Barn Kids’ Summer Reading Challenge is all new this year! Kids 10 and under must read all the books on an age-appropriate list, then they can bring their reading list to a PBK store and receive a free book.
- Barnes & Noble’s Summer Reading Program requires kids to read eight books andwrite a short recommendation on each. Once that’s finished, they may turn in their completed Summer Reading form at a store and choose a free book from this list.
- TD Bank Summer Reading will deposit $10 into a Young Savers account when your child reads at least 10 books and submits his reading list on this TD Bank form! (You must have either an existing Young Savers account or be willing to open one for your child.)
- Borders Bookstores’ Double Dog Dare Challenge will give children a free book when they read 10 books.
- HEB Grocery Stores will give kids who read 10 books a free t-shirt when you mail in this summer reading form.
- Chuck E Cheese offers a Reading Rewards Calendar (along with several other rewards calendars). Once a child has completed two weeks of reading, he or she can submit the completed Chuck E Cheese calendar for 10 free tokens.
- The Half Price Books Feed Your Brain Summer Reading Program will give kids (14 and under) who track at least 600 minutes of reading over the summer a $5 gift certificate (to redeem July 5 – August 7). The completed summer reading log is required to get your gift certificate at the end of the summer.
- National Amusements Movie Theaters is hosting Bookworm Wednesdays. Just bring a completed book report form to select Wednesday morning movie events and get free admission to the featured movie.
- Your Local Library: Be sure to check with your local library to see what sort of summer reading program they are offering.

Thanks for posting these! Our local library has swallowed the pill of not wanting to make kids feel bad by having competition of any sort, so they only give “participation” awards. That does not motivate my boys to read! Some of these definitely will!
