The green beans are also starting to sprout, and I am really excited about being able to saute those on the grill. We have about 8 rows, so I should have lots to make soon.
I was so excited to check the garden this weekend and find our lettuce and spinach sprouting up. The only mistake we made with the lettuce was to plant it all at one time. So, that means it will all be ready to use at the same time. The best way is to stagger the planting every 1-2 weeks.
My mother in law gave us a plant of mint. Don’t ever just plant mint into the ground. It spreads like wildfire and will take over wherever you plant it. You need to take a plastic pot like the one you see above, and cut the bottom off. Plant the entire pot with the mint into the ground. The root system for mints is shallow, but it spreads. So, the pot will keep it contained in one area.
Here are some perennials that come up each year. I honestly can’t remember the name of them, but they are so pretty when they shoot up. This one is a hosta, and I love the way it blooms! (Thanks Lana!)

And it looks like we may not have another frost, so it is time to put the plants into the ground. We bought our tomato plants this weekend, so I’ll be posting about that this week.
Coming next week… tomato plants, jalapeno, green & red peppers, zucchini and yellow squash and cucumbers.
What are you planting this week in your garden? Any tips on helping us keep the gardens easy and plentiful?
We have 70 lbs of potatoes in the ground. We also have grapes, lettuce, green beans, and cucumbers. We will try raspberries next year depending on how we do with our grapes. We have pigs, cows, a horse, chickens, and a dog that we feed with a lot of this food that we don’t get to eat. They love it and it is super cheap. The 70lbs of taters cost us $17.00 at Coop. Gardens are so much fun. You should get a chicken…for the eggs. 🙂 They are even more fun!
Looks like your perennial is a hosta. I live seeing them come back in the spring too.
Thanks for the tip on planting mint — I had no idea!
I’m trying square foot gardening this year — lettuce (romaine and ice berg), squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, and jalapenos. I think I’ll put in pole beans and more tomatoes after the lettuce is harvested. Oh, and I have a blueberry bush and grape vine (not in the square foot garden) — but I’m not sure if either with produce this year. As Paul tells us, though “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.” (1 Corinthians 3:6).
Praying God blesses all our gardens. 🙂
I went looking for potato plants at the Farmer’s Market this weekend, but all they had were seed potatoes… no “plants”. Kelly, didn’t you say you were able to find some that were already leafy? Any suggestions- or am I too late to plant that crop? Thank you!! 🙂
My husband went to the local Co-Op and got “spuds”, the potatoes with sprouts. We planted them into the ground and made a mound, no leafy plants though. You can do your own too. Use a potato that is growing the knots on them and put the knot into water. The knots will grow roots. Once the roots are a few inches, you can plant them in the ground.
Thinking about starting a garden for the first time this year. Possibly lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes. Am I too late? Do you have any suggestions for first time gardeners?
