When Michael Kelley’s son Joshua was diagnosed with leukemia, his situation was so critical that chemo began that very day. Wednesdays were Pretty Normal: A Boy, Cancer, and God chronicles the prognosis, the treatment, and the pain of watching a two-year-old boy battle and ultimately beat the disease–but mostly, this book is about what God taught Michael through the trials.
I love how Michael is so honest about how God used his little son to heal him in ways he didn’t even know he needed to be healed. While some friends stuck around and some drifted away, God saw him through every step of the way, taking him on a spiritual journey that taught him more about Himself than he could have ever imagined.
Wednesdays were Pretty Normal: A Boy, Cancer, and God is a tear-jerker, but it is so worth the read. I picked up the book thinking that it was going to be about Joshua, and it sort of was, but really, the focus was on what Michael was going through. Despite the heavy subject matter, I found this book to be spiritually refreshing. Michael’s intense soul-searching gave him an interesting perspective on several of the most beloved Scripture passages. It definitely made me think outside the box. Anyone who is dealing with any sort of loss, doubt, or woundedness will find great comfort in Michael’s honest telling of his personal story. You can connect with a community of others who are journeying through cancer, as well as share your own cancer story at the Wednesdays were Pretty Normal Interactive Facebook page HERE, plus get a FREE download of chapter one.
