When my kids were younger, I remember reading articles and blog posts about how family reading time was the best part of the day. Back then, it seemed pretty much impossible to get both of them, at the same time, to sit still and quietly listen to a story! As they’ve gotten older, however, we have created a comfortable rhythm with our evening routine. After dinner and baths, when everyone is ready for bed, we sit together on the couch or bed and read Bible stories and our read-aloud book for the day.
Now I understand what all those articles and blog posts were talking about. It is our family’s favorite part of the day. We wouldn’t think of missing it. Admittedly, with our active 5-year-old son, at times it can be challenging, but often he will listen while coloring or playing quietly with his cars on the floor. It is our family’s favorite part of the day. If he’s especially engaged, like when we’re reading from a book with pictures, he likes to sit in his daddy’s lap. Often during read aloud time, I’ll knit dishcloths for Operation Christmas Child boxes. It’s such a bonding time for our family, and the perfect end to the day.
What is your favorite time of day? Do you have family reading time?
