This came out a couple of days ago, but the bottom line is we get a three day extension to file our 2011 taxes. Because of Emancipation Day in Washington, DC, workers will be given the day off and the new deadline for filing taxes is on April 18….not April 15.
Also, the IRS announced:
“tax law changes enacted by Congress and signed by President (Barack) Obama in December mean some people need to wait until mid- to late February to file their tax returns in order to give the IRS time to reprogram its processing systems. Included are taxpayers who itemize deductions on Form 1040 Schedule A.”
To see how that will affect you specifically, talk to a tax professional.
As one of those tax professionals…don’t even get me started on this silly Emancipation Day rule! We hate it! 3 more extra-long burn-the-midnight-oil days for a holiday only celebrated in DC???
But yes…those last-minute rule changes Congress passed the week before Christmas will delay being able to file early in the season. So I guess maybe we’ll need those 3 extra days. But I still don’t have to like it. *wink*
Can you please tell me how we are supposed to know when the IRS has all of the changes in place so that it is safe for us to file?
