From reader Gail:
Regarding the Sales Tax Holiday, I got this below from a HIGHLY RELIABLE SOURCE. hAVE YOU HEARD OF OTHERS WHO JACK UP PRICES FOR THIS SALES EVENT?
Just a little buyer beware note: if you can, research prices where you plan to shop sometime this week before the weekend. Last year I took the kids to their favorite stores after worship on the Wednesday before the tax free weekend. I wanted to avoid long lines waiting to try on clothes and long lines at the register. I made a list of the prices, sizes and such and where they were located so we could just walk in and pick up our selections and be out quickly. I was shocked when I returned that Saturday morning to the stores and all of the prices had been increased on the items we had planned to buy. What the tax-free status was meant to save us was negated by the way the retailers had jacked up the prices. On everything I had planned to buy, I would have been better off to buy it that Wednesday night and pay for the taxes!
In one store, I got a manager and showed them where I had written down the prices on shirts that had said “on sale for $9.99 – reduced from $14.99″ that were now “on sale for $14.99 – reduced from $19.99.” They admitted nothing and said I must have written it down wrong! I wish I had taken a picture with my cell phone as proof!!
You just may want to research a little ahead of time to make sure you are saving money. In these economic times, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the same thing happens this year.
I have never seen diapers on any list of tax-free items….is this true? Anyone else confirm?
