What is the meaning of Labor Day? Labor Day originated as a way to celebrate the United States work force. Back in the late 1800’s, just after all the changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution, we were looking at a different culture. Americans have always been work-oriented, but at this point, our work had moved from laboring in farm fields to laboring in downtown factories. Different articles will tell you different things about exactly whose idea it was, but you get the picture: We wanted to rejoice in the fact that we are a country of workers–and that’s the true meaning of Labor Day.
“Before the reward there must be labor. You plant before you harvest. You sow in tears before you reap joy.” ~Ralph Ransom
Celebrating the Meaning of Labor Day
Celebrating the meaning of Labor Day is certainly about being thankful for the work of all the people who have made our country great, but I also like Labor Day just because it is a holiday that finally celebrates people like me. I am a Type A personality. I thrive on work and accomplishment. I’m a competitive, impatient list-maker, constantly evaluating what is worth my time and what is not. When it comes to a work ethic, I feel like I got one hard-wired into my personal DNA. I love to work, and I work hard, I work diligently–sometimes I think I work in my sleep!
Work hard, but not just to please your masters when they are watching. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart. Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. ~ Ephesians 6:6-7
It’s only been in recent years that I’ve come to accept those traits as my nature, however, indicative of the unique way that God made me. His desire is for me to use the strengths associated with my personality to serve Him, and then surrender the weaknesses that are part of the bargain to draw me closer to Him.
The weaknesses? Oh yes, there are weaknesses associated with loving work, and we all know workaholics! I have to constantly guard myself from setting up work as my first priority. It is not, and it should never be.
“Don’t waste your energy striving for perishable food like that. Work for the food that sticks with you, food that nourishes your lasting life, food the Son of Man provides. He and what he does are guaranteed by God the Father to last.” ~Jesus Christ (The Message)
Labor Day Sales
Labor Day sales abound as we tie this holiday closely to the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year. Even though school begins earlier and earlier (it seems) each year, I still associate Labor Day Sales with going back to school or going back to college. Now is the time to take advantage on great sales on school and office supplies, electronics, and even small appliances and bedding (great for setting up dorm rooms and first apartments).

Labor was the first price, the original purchase–money that was paid for all things. It was not by gold or by silver, but by labor, that all wealth of the world was originally purchased. ~Adam Smith
