What's for Dinner: White Beans with Chow-Chow and Sliced Tomatoes

on July 6, 2010 · 0 Comments

Tonight’s Dinner is…White Beans in the crockpot with chow-chow.  I am slicing some garden tomatoes and making homemade cornbread.  Good old southern style meal!

Anyone else know what chow-chow is?  Curious to see… 🙂

I do! My Granny always had chow chow. I was blessed to have her and my Grandmother until I was 42–lost both of them a couple of years ago. So thinking about “chow chow” brings up some good memories of Granny!

My mom always bought it when I was little and we ate it with white beans too.

It was always fun to help my Grandma make up a batch on early Saturday mornings, we would dice and mix and then can it.. I learned quite a lot while at Grandma’s house! She would can it, keep some for the family to enjoy and then I would walk a jar or two to the neighbors up the street.. and lets not forget the fresh turnip greens or fresh snapped green beans she would have cooked up to use with it… YUMMY!! I purchased some from the store a few months back (I was missing my grandma and really wanted to smell it and taste it again).. but it was no match to what I remember as a little girl.

It is a cabbage based relish that is a little spicy and sweet. It is so good!
