This easy Hobo Dinner recipe has quickly made it to the top as my family’s Number 1 favorite meal. They just think it’s delicious, but I have many more reasons for liking it than they do.
Quick and Easy Meals
This hobo dinner is one of the all-time best when it comes to quick and easy meals. I always have all the ingredients on hand. It’s no mess to cook, whether we’re going with the oven or the grill, and no mess to clean up. And even after all these benefits, it’s also one of the best-tasting meals that I make. It’s so good!
Hobo Dinners on the Grill
As many of you know, Hobo Dinners on the grill taste incredible! This is a traditional meal for camping or any overnight trip you take where you are going to cook outside. We love to do a backyard camp out with the kids and cook these over the firepit.
Hobo Dinners in the Oven
I remember having these when I was a kid. My mom made Hobo Dinners in the oven. Hers is a little bit different version than I make, so this is my take on it. Feel free to adapt the ingredients to include your favorite vegetables and seasonings.
I use whatever veggies I have on hand. If I don’t have everything listed in the recipe, I use what I do have. Plus, you can definitely individualize these. For example, my kids don’t want Worcestershire sauce on theirs. They prefer that I douse theirs with ketchup! My husband and I put the Worcestershire on ours and then I add some A1 sauce when it comes out of the oven (or off the grill!). We make a pretty good-sized meal just out of the meat and veggies. We do about a quarter pound of meat per person and I add lots of vegetables to fill us up. If you have older kids or bigger eaters, then I would increase the meat portion. The beauty of this is it’s a meal in itself. You don’t need anything else.
- One-fourth (¼) pound hamburger, shaped into a patty
- 1 cup of cut-up fresh vegetables: sliced onions, carrot sticks, 2-inch celery sticks, cubed potatoes, salt and pepper, a dash of Worcestershire sauce
- Using a large square piece of aluminum foil, place patty in the center of aluminum foil.
- Salt and pepper patty generously.
- Arrange vegetables on top.
- Add more salt and pepper.
- Add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce (more if you like it a lot!).
- Fold the foil up tightly around the entire meal. Be sure all the edges are folded down and smoothed together, sort of like a pocket. You don’t want any steam to escape.
- We use a permanent marker to put everyone’s initials on top, so we know whose is whose.
- Cook on the grill or on an open fire for 25-30 minutes. You may also cook in a 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes.
- Be careful opening these--escaping steam can burn you!
Can these be made ahead and frozen?
Instead of groundbeef we use petite sirloin steaks or other small cut of meat. We also add tomatoes and garlic and whatever peppers we have on hand from the garden. My son likes pineapple in his. Blueberries make a good syrup and so do other beries we put a cup/serving. We also use jicama and radishes. We serve these with hummus, pita bread or chips.
