It’s that time of year when many people are wondering how to donate school supplies for the kids that need them. This month, our giving challenge is to make sure that we are helping students in our communities have everything they need to achieve their goals and enjoy academic success this school year.
DID YOU KNOW? Teachers spend an average of $356 of their own money on school supplies for their classrooms every single year.
School and office supplies are on sale everywhere right now. (Be sure to check out my Back to School Sales page for all the latest deals.) This is the best time of year to stock up, and it’s the best time of year to help out your local school system. Here are just a few things that are needed:
- Notebook paper
- Spiral notebooks
- Bulletin board paper
- Pencil sharpeners
- Pens/pencils
- Paper clips
- Staples
- Hole puncher
- Dry erase markers/erasers
- Desk organizer for teacher
- Copy paper
- Flash drives
If you’re wondering where to go to drop off school supplies, call your children’s school or the school nearest you and just ask them if you can come by with the supplies.
DID YOU KNOW? Schools with a “Title 1” designation have the highest percentage of students coming from low-income families. The greatest need for donations of school supplies will be there.
LARGER NEEDS: A great project for a neighborhood group or a small group would be to call your local school and ask if there is a larger need that your group could help with, whether it be purchases or hands-on assistance.
- Copy machine
- Computer
- Desks or desk chairs
- Maintenance, such as painting and cleaning
- Donations (and volunteers) to help the class take a few field trips
LIBRARY NEEDS: School libraries can use your gently used children’s books. If you like to shop yard sales and thrift stores, always be on the lookout for kids’ books you can donate to your local school.
