Ants on a log (cream cheese variation) - snack...
Image via Wikipedia

I am always struggling to find healthy and easy snacks for myself and the kids each day. We have our standby’s that are great, but I want to branch out a bit. Our usual’s consist of…

  • apples with peanut butter
  • popcorn
  • cheese and crackers
  • smoothies
  • Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins

So, do you have any great ideas or recipes to make snack time easier and healthier for us? I would love to hear your ideas, so please share them in a comment below.

the one in the picture is one of our favorites, except we use cranberries instead of raisins. we call it “ladybugs on a log”.

we also like edamame, and crudites. i cut up some fruit and veggies, put them on a platter with some dip, and leave that on the table for grazing.

We tend to stay in a snack rut, too. Here are some of our regular snacks:
graham crackers and applesauce (or yogurt)
    biscuit twists
apples wrapped with ham and cheese
    veggies and dip

    not too original, I know.

Celery w/ cream cheese or PB (like in the picture you posted), fruit salad (my fav. is strawberries & bananas, cut up, & drizzled w/ honey), yogurt, cheese sticks, hummus w/ veggies or crackers to dip, baked tortilla chips w/ salsa.

I love making a “nibble tray” and filling it with healthy options. This encourages kids to graze throughout the day, which is wonderful!

Mix fat free cream cheese with strawberry jelly/jam. Put this on graham crackers and you’ve got mini strawberry cheesecakes.

We make jelly rolls that I learned to make as a kid. You take a piece of bread and roll it out until it is thin, spread it with cream cheese, then spread jelly on top (we use Smuckers simply fruit so it is healthier however my kids don’t know the difference!) and roll it up. I also make peanut butter snack balls which is pb, dry milk powder, honey and raisins. Mix it all together and roll into balls then roll in graham cracker crumbs. (Store extras in the fridge). We call both of these treats in our house but they could certainly do for snacks too!

My mom would make the peanut butter “candy” when I was a kid. She didn’t use raisins, but she added crispy rice cereal and we’d eat a spoonful out of the tub. One Christmas, I made them myself, rolled into small balls and dipped them in melted dark an milk chocolate. Everyone that tried them absolutely loved them!

My kids love nuts (almonds, mixed, etc.) alone or with raisins or goldfish. Some other ideas: granola bars, any fruit, cottage cheese, yogurt/yogurt smoothies, hard-boiled eggs, string cheese. We do as much protein as possible to help keep them filled longer! Carbs bring them back an hour later.

A favorite snack for us is homemade guacamole and homemade pita chips.

Nutella w/the store brand version or Ritz Crackers! Nutella is made from all-natural ingredients, and is a great protien-booster for the midday blues =)

My daughter is not a big raisin fan but she loves dried craberries so instead of ants on a log, celery with peanut butter and raisins lined up to look like ants, we have lady bugs on a log! Celery with crunchy peanut butter and dried cranberries!

a big hit with my children and their sports teams are cored apples (with my Pampered Chef gadget) stuffed with peanut butter – I serve them in coffee filters (works like a tough napkin) or in plastic bags to send to school. The apples do not turn because of the peanut butter. these always sell out at the concession stand – enjoy!
