Most people I know have the same problem this year: Finding cheap Mother’s Day gift ideas that express just how valuable Mom is without blowing the budget you’ve been trying to stay on top of! Ever since I became a mom several years ago, I’m struck by how my children are gifts in and of themselves, and how the gifts that mean the most to me are the ones that didn’t cost anything. Gifts like pictures, impromptu hugs, and sweet, sticky kisses! It also means a lot to me when they do something without being asked, like pick up their toys or help each other with chores. Hey, I’m a mom! The gifts that mean the most might look like they are “cheap,” but I know that they are priceless.

Write a letter of appreciation to Mom. Don’t worry about your handwriting–depending on your mom’s age, choose a readable font on your computer that she can easily see and begin working on your letter that way. Then you’ll have plenty of time to work on it until you get it just right. Include these elements:
- A sweet memory that is special to you from when you were a child.
- A “we -can-laugh-about-it-now” memory from your teenage years.
- Something mom taught you that you are using now as you parent your own children.
If you use pretty paper and a nice envelope, you’ll create a keepsake that your mom will cherish forever. As a mom, this is one of the best Mother’s Day gifts I could ever receive.

If you’re looking for gifts that are inexpensive for mom, try the ones suggested below:
A Day-cation. When was the last time you spent a full day with your mom? It doesn’t cost anything to go antiquing, or for a walk in the park. Contact your city’s chamber of commerce to get information on local attractions that are inexpensive. (Remember: she may qualify for a senior discount!) Something that is different and interesting to do together will make a new memory. Pack a lunch or use a Groupon to find a way to eat a nice lunch that stays in your budget. Be sure to take a picture of the two of you out together, and give that to her in an inexpensive frame later as a memento of your Mother’s Day together.
Spring Door Wreath. I don’t know about you, but my mom still has some of the crafts I made when I was a kid! I think that as an adult, I can probably come up with something that will be a little better than those ceramics that have become permanently affixed to her kitchen wall.
