I love starting off the day not only with a healthy breakfast, but also by making sure that I have a devotional time together with the kids. I have found that when we are already seated together at the table, it’s the perfect time to have our Bible time. By putting our Bible time first, I’m letting the kids know it is a priority. Even before our school subjects, it’s important to have time to study God’s Word together. It’s amazing the insights and questions they will ask. I love sharing this time with them. Here are a few of the resources that we use.
The Millers series – This is our absolute favorite way to start the day. In fact, after we read one of the Millers stories, my kids always want to read another one. They ask to read them again during our family devotional time. Each chapter is told with such rich language and description that my children can picture what is going on in each story. There are small map pictures at the start of each chapter, so the kids have already learned about some major geography just from reading these for less than two weeks! Right now we are reading Missionary Stories with the Millers, but we will move on to all the stories in the series because we have liked them so much. They include Storytime with the Millers, Prudence with the Millers, School Days with the Millers, and Wisdom with the Millers.
Heroes for Young Readers – These are great books about the heroes of Christian missions, and their adventures are told with great excitement and suspense. Your kids (and you!) will love learning about missionaries like Nate Saint, Gladys Aylward, Corrie ten Boom, and Amy Carmichael. We also use this Heroes for Young Readers Activity Guide which has lots of great educational activities that go along with the stories. There are two different versions of these stories, but for our purposes we like the “Young Readers” because it is written in poetic style with a cadence the kids love!
Doorposts: For Instruction in Righteousness– Using this resource has helped us to delve deeper into important character issues that I want to focus on. You can read my complete review of For Instructions in Righteousness HERE.
The Old Testament Book of Proverbs – I love reading a few verses from a chapter and just talking about it with the kids. (See this post about my favorite Bible versions to use.)
Seeds Family Worship – We love these CD’s and printables. The kids and I learn a lot of great Scripture and are able to commit it to memory easily through these songs. You can even expand on the verses by having them use them as copywork. You’ll find coloring pages and even little books by heading over to use these free downloads by Bible Story Printables.
