Unique Father's Day Gifts

Here are some ideas for unique Father’s Day gifts. Everyone thinks that their dad is one-of-a-kind, right? Of course! That’s because he is. I think the most special Father’s Day gifts are the ones that are unique to the person you are giving them to–given with his interests, his preferences, and his style in mind. When I’m trying to come up with something truly original, Father’s Day gifts have to answer the right questions about the men I love. Try asking yourself:

Creative Father’s Day Gifts

If you’re looking for creative Father’s Day gifts, ask yourself, What did he like when he was young? A lot of men put hobbies on the back burner as they get older, and especially once they become dads. For example, maybe your dad was an avid comic book or stamp collector. Maybe he loved to trade baseball cards. Does he still have that collection, stored safely on a shelf somewhere? As we get older, there are so many other things more pressing than comic books, stamp collecting, or going to baseball card trading shows. But that doesn’t mean that Dad lost interest. It means he lost time. It’s really not too difficult to go to online sites and seek out that coveted rookie card of his favorite player, or a pristine copy of a 1993 Marvel comic book. Ask around and find out what Dad used to like. Chances are good it will still bring a smile to his face.

What will he not buy for himself? Most dads “make do.” While I’m all about that line of thinking as a great, money-saving philosophy, it doesn’t need to come into play when I am looking for a gift! In fact, sometimes that is just the inspiration I need for finding the perfect thing for Dad. When was the last time Dad got a new pair of swimming trunks, a new lawn chair, a new recliner, or a new pair of pj’s? A quick look around the house snooping through drawers and closets, or sneaking a trip out to his shed or workspace, and you will see what he has been just “making do” with. (Inexpensive can still mean nice! Check out these inexpensive gifts for Dad.)

Speaking of the workspace, how about his tools? These are things you don’t think about until you need them. Chances are, if Dad is missing items from his tool chest, it’s because you borrowed them and didn’t return them—so you owe him anyway! If your dad loves working with his hands, there are always new gadgets that make for perfect gifts for Dad’s special day.

Another Father’s Day Present Idea

Here’s another Father’s Day present idea: What does your dad think is fun? And I really am talking about your dad. I think sometimes we gift our dads or even our husbands with outings that are things we want to do! You know, like tickets to a show that he would never want to go to, or gift cards to a restaurant that is one of our favorites. (Well, it happens!) But what about tickets to a sporting event that you are not interested in at all–and make that two tickets so he can take a buddy or even a son-in-law? If I can’t look at an outing or event and honestly think that my dad will think it is fun, then I need to pass on it.

And finally, ask yourself: What if I made it myself? When I’m thinking about something that is really creative for Dad, there are always going to be store-bought options. But what will mean the most to him is if I put my personal spin on it.  For example:

  • I can always take my dad out to eat. But what if I invite him over for a home-cooked meal?
  • I can always buy him some kind of knick-knack. But what if I take the plunge and try some homemade Father’s Day gift ideas?
  • I can always get him tickets to a ballgame. But I what if the kids and I present him with homemade passes to all of my daughter’s soccer games? Complete with transportation, snacks, and drinks provided?
  • I can always get him the latest books or movies. But what if I go with Christian Father’s Day gifts that will speak to his heart and leave him feeling empowered and valued?

And the best part of those gifts is that they are not overpriced. Of course, your time is not cheap. The Father’s Day gift ideas that are the most valued are the ones where Dad knows you thought about him. He knows you took the time to come up with a gift from your heart. Those are the ones that are always a perfect fit.

Thanks for the great gift ideas Kelly! For the past few years my Dad has really taken to Tailgating and our gifts have revolved around that. Last year we upgraded his grill; you should have seen what he was “making do with”. I got the idea for his big gift for this Fathers Day from one of my coworkers at Dish who suggested the Tailgater Portable Satellite TV system. It is a little dish in a box that automatically find its own signals so dad can have his game up and playing before his coals even get warm. I think he will love it, especially because we have planned a little family reunion over his first planned tailgating party of the year. He will be so surprised to have all of his family and friends show up for his favorite pass time.
